Why doesn't he and wifey take a trip for a few years and try some places out - surely they can figure out the answer, no one else can do it for them....????

I would spend a few months in Vietnam and Laos. 

 

Book a hotel for the month for good deals. The same applies to Thailand, BTW.

Nothing whatsoever exotic about the place, the natives do not like us much, super expensive, hard to get a date, and rather vanilla. But pretty, and the climate is nice.
