PATTANI, 11th September 2018 (NNT) - The incumbent Army Commander-in-Chief has expressed his confidence in his successor's ability to maintain peace in the South, noting that the region’s overall situation has significantly improved.

Speaking about passing the baton to the incoming Army Chief General Apirat Kongsompong, the incumbent army commander General Chalermchai Sitthisart, said on Monday that General Apirat, who is serving as his deputy, is skilled in dealing with the situation in the southern region, citing his previous experience in the area.

The comment came during the two generals' visit to Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 in Sirindhorn Camp in Pattani Province.

General Chalermchai praised the unit for its immense contribution to the nation’s security and handed out policies to the officials there. Making his farewell visit, he pointed out that the southern situation has significantly improved over the past two years while he's been in office. The number of violent incidents has declined and the quality of life of the local population has improved. General Chalermchai said he genuinely believes the South will soon achieve sustainable peace.

General Chalermchai then urged officials to be extra cautious between September 15th and the beginning of next month. He is concerned that a group of people with different viewpoints may take advantage of that period to incite unwanted situations.
