Grim reports on climate change say act now or be ready for catastrophe

by definition the Little Ice Age was not an ice age as it was not a period of long term reduction in the temperature of the Earth's climate, only localized reductions in temperature for short periods in sporadic locations, no overall cooling, in fact we saw a rise in temperature of the Earth's climate during this time.

Which is why they chose to call it the Little ice age, the overall warming made them think of it.

It is happening already, the world is watching Scandinavia move into sustainable energy production, learning from them and copying them, many countries have responded to the example they are setting.

What percentage of Scandinavia’s energy is “sustainable”?

As long as the 3. World countries do not stop polluting and increasing their populations, it is unfortunately useless, that civilized countries do anything about global warming.

First of all all burnings of forests and fields will have to stop. Burning garbage should only  be allowed in incinerators which produce energy. Plastic will make an excellent fuel.

Travelling by planes should be limited (specially seats with extra  space) and private jets should be totally banned.

Okay, it would take a central world government with dictatorial powers to accomplish all that.

Private jets? I hope you realize that some of the biggest  Global Warming/Climate Change Alarmists...two prime examples being Al Gore and Leonardo Di Caprio travel by either privately owned or leased or hired private jet.

All those international “COP” Climate conferences at exotic world locations they all fly in by jet travelling first class, many of them by private jet, drive to their five star hotels and champagne and caviar banquets by air conditioned limousines, and chat on how they are going to stop Climate Change by bringing in carbon taxes on us and having us cut back our elaborate middle class lifestyles.

Sure we warmed a tiny bit since 1850. Climate ALWAYS changes. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.

But this crazy Gore Bull Warming/Climate Change Alarmism is just so much disguised politico-economic bull crap ! !

You keep going on about the little cooling periods and I keep making you aware of the warming periods yet you keep ignoring it.  An example, between 1738 and 1784 the average temps in Europe rose by more than they had fallen through the prior cooling period.  It doesn't take voodoo to make ice melt more when it is hotter.

Explain it to the people who suffered in the Little Ice Age !

In 1589 the Allalin glacier in Switzerland descended so low that it blocked the Saas valley, forming a lake. The moraine broke a few months later, sending floods downstream. Seven years later 70 people died when similar floods from the Gietroz glacier submerged the town of Martigny.

As the glaciers relentlessly pushed downslope thousands of acres of farm land were ruined and many villages were left uninhabitable such as La Bois where a government official noted “where there are still six houses. all uninhabited save two, in which live some wretched women and children…Above and adjoining the village there is a great and horrible glacier of great and incalculable volume which can promise nothing but the destruction of the houses and lands which still remain”. Eventually the village was completely abandoned.

The same official visited the hamlet of La Rosiere in 1616 and found" “The great glacier of La Rosiere every now and then goes bounding and thrashing or descending…There have been destroyed 43 journaux of land with nothing but stones and 8 houses, 7 barns and 5 little granges have been entirely ruined and destroyed”.

Alpine glaciers, which had already advanced steadily between 1546 and 1590, moved aggressively forward again between 1600 and 1616. Villages that had flourished since medieval times were in danger or already destroyed. During the long period of glacial retreat and relative quiet in earlier times, opportunistic farmers had cleared land within a kilometer of what seemed to them to be stationary ice sheets. Now their descendants paid the price with their villages and livelihoods threatened.

Between 1627 and 1633 Chamonix lost a third if its land through avalanches, snow, glaciers and flooding, and the remaining hectares were under constant threat. In 1642 the Des Bois glacier advanced “over a musket shot every day, even in August”.

By this time people near the ice front were planting only oats and a little barley in fields that were under snow for most of the year. Their forefathers had paid their tithes in wheat. Now they obtained but one harvest in three and even the grain rotted after harvesting. “The people here are so badly fed they are dark and wretched and seem only half alive”.

In 1715 the village of Le Pre-du-Bar vanished under a glacier caused landslide. The glacial high tide in the Alps came around 1750 and gradually the glaciers began their retreat, much to the relief of the people who lived there.

The top 5 producers of co2 per capita are, UAE, USA, Australia, Saudi and Canada.  The notion that this is a 3rd world problem is false, those countries just happen to have more people but each person pollutes far less, for instance a Chinese person is responsible for less than half of the co2 emissions as an American person, so to expect China to make the move before the US is completely unfair.

What on earth would the people who suffered in the Little Ice Age need to be told about what was happening at the same time in other parts of the world?  Does knowing that there were floods in Scotland in 1984 undermine your faith in the knowledge of the 1984 Sudan drought?  Do the people of Sudan who suffered the droughts of 1984 need to be told about the 1984 floods in Scotland?

The planet doesn’t give a damn about “per capita.”

It only cares about over-all output of “greenhouse gases”/CO2...

Do you realize how many people live in China and India...perhaps the two biggest greenhouse gas emitters?

Do you have a clue as to which countries most of the CO2 is coming from ? ?

Well of course you do...but you don’t really care.

For you to worry about per capita shows you are not at all really serious about how to really attack your so called “problem” of Gore Bull Warming.

Your more concerned about bringing down western industrialized capitalism...and you cover your real politico-economic agenda in the cloak of “...concern about Climate Change.”

   Pathetic !

It wouldn’t take much cooling to put us right back into Little Ice Age conditions...or even worse.

Just a drop of 2 or 3 degrees C average world temperature would be all it would take. Perhaps not even that much.

I’ve read the history, and I have no desire for my descendants to experience that.

Can you not see that this is a global issue and that we are all responsible?  Obviously the people who pollute the most have the most to change.

A similar story to what would happen with a 2 or 3 degree temperature rise, it would be disastrous, and that is the concern at the moment, no one expects it to go down any time soon.

Not embarrassed at all. Who is producing the most CO2?

I say China and India. This is a global “problem” according to you and your  comrades.

You want to solve it “per capita?    Good luck investigating each individual person to find out how much CO2 they’re producing.

You have to tackle this on a country to country basis.

And the fact is, China and India are your biggest producers of CO2.

And isn’t China still building more coal fired generating stations? And how about India? What are the Africa nations doing? I read something about their growing CO2 productions also. Where the hell did I see that article?

So let’s see if I have this right.

According to you, we are in dire danger from Gore Bull Warming and many Alarmists are saying that it’s already too late to do something. (Lots of “tipping points” already passed)

Something must be done “right now” or we are all doomed.

So let’s go after the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.A.E. and a few other western nations. That’s the ticket. We’ve solved the “problem”.

“Pssssst” Don’t worry about China and India....even though they put out way more CO2 than the others........just......just don’t worry about China and India or places like Africa either. Okay ? The planet will be just fine once we’ve taken care of the U.S.  Canada etc.  Trust me.

Not sure about Scandinavia as a whole, but it is those countries that are leading the world, Sweden is above the rest, with 85% of energy from sustainable sources.

85% Including cars, trucks, busses and air travel?

How much air conditioning do they use?

What do they build there?

What do they grow there?

Are they a net exporter or do they outsource their impact to the planet?

Good !  I hope you’re right. Better to go up a couple of degrees than to go down a couple of degrees. It seems that on this planet life much prefers warmth over cold.

But looking at graphs of the past 400,000 years or so, it appears we are due for another Glacial Period relatively soon.

Can you imagine an ice sheet a mile thick sitting on top of Montreal or Stockholm, or Toronto?  Vast amounts of grain growing regions gone.

Sea level about 350 feet lower, exposing the continental shelves all over the world.

    That’d be a bad day!

They are the biggest users of E85 in the EU, they have the largest personal car fleet and the largest fleet of buses in Europe running on biofuel.

Its not a hot place, they use heating, more than half of theirs is from biofuel.

They build mainly using wood, even multistory buildings.

They grow things like oats and barley.

I’ll take that as a no.

And they get the bulk of their electricity from hydro, yes?

I think up-state New York is almost 100% renewable energy as is Las Vegas.

No, its only 20% of all vehicular fuel consumed that is biofuel, the point was about the leading the world though, remember?

53% hydro and 40% nuclear.

As for New York State, nonsense, they have pledged to reach 50% of electricity produced from renewable sources in the coming years, they are way behind Sweden, and that is hardly the issue what one state and one town are doing, at least it isn't in your own argument, which was that the onus must be on the nations that produce the most.

I said up-state New York, not New York State. Near 100% hydro.

Bio fuel is where the use good farm land to grow fuel crops (effectively taking food from the poor) to burn it in their cars, correct?

All that just so they can pat themselves on the back.

In the US, it’s generally the same crowd up in arms about climate change that do all they can to stop any hydro or nuclear.

China produces about twice the CO2 that the U.S. produces.....

The U.S. CO2 production has been dropping since 2007. (EIA)

Declines in CO2 emissions in 2017 were led by the US (-0.5% and 42 million tons, see chart above). This is the ninth time in this century that the US has had the largest decline in emissions in the world. This also was the third consecutive year that emissions in the US declined, though the fall was the smallest over the last three years.

3. Carbon emissions from energy use from the US are the lowest since 1992, the year that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) came into existence. The next largest decline was in Ukraine (-10.1% and 28.1 tons).  (AEI)

"Yes, The U.S. Leads All Countries In Reducing Carbon Emissions". Forbes. 2017-10-24.

And the U.S. government alone has given about $90 Billion now to Climate Research and green industries...

China produces twice the CO2....China, since 2006, keeps emitting more CO2 than any other country.

  1.  "China's Emissions: More Than U.S. Plus Europe, and Still Rising". The New York Times. 2018-01-25.
  2.  "Chinese coal fuels rise in global carbon emissions". The Times. 2017-11-14.
  3.  "World carbon dioxide emissions data by country: China speeds ahead of the rest". The Guardian. 2011-01-31.
  4.  "China now no. 1 in CO2 emissions; USA in second position". PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

The largest increase in carbon emissions in 2017 came from China (1.6% and 119 tons), a reversal from the past three years when the largest increases in emissions came from India. China’s emissions in 2017 were 0.3% higher than the previous peak in 2014. China has had the world’s largest increments in carbon emission every year this century except in four years – 2000 and between 2014-16. The next highest increment came from India where emissions rose by 4.4% (93.2 million tons, see chart), though lower than its 10-year average (6% p.a.).

Together, China and India accounted for nearly half (212.2 million tons) of the increase in global carbon emissions (426.4 million tons). EU emissions were also up (1.5% and 42.4 million tons, see chart) with just Spain accounting for 44% of the increase in EU emissions. Among other EU members, UK and Denmark reported the lowest carbon emissions in their history.

China has given a bit towards Climate Research... but peanuts compared to the U.S.... and its building more coal fired generating stations....  You can't breathe in Beijing or Shanghai more than half the time from the air pollution.....

....China is raising its CO2 production and says they might do something to stop their rising CO2 emissions beginning in 2030.

  Nice ........

But Climate Change and Global Warming is so dangerous that we must do something NOW ! !

....and you want to ignore China and attack the U.S.

Hey.... makes sense to me...  LOL    5555555   ????

If we are going to entertain the metaphor of a sentient planet. I would say the planet is very old and fondly remembers the good old days when it was warmer and there were dinosaurs and rain forests even in the far north. I would think the planet would say. Don't worry about that CO2, I got uses for that, but can you do something about that crap your dumping in the oceans?

Oh, so not even a whole state, just a bit of one of them, and the relevance?  Was that supposed to do something toward getting them off the hook?  This is the county producing the second largest amount of co2 and 2.5 times more than the country you wanted to see pressure put on.

Not sure why you think biofuel means taking food from the poor, it actually means the poor get to sell their traditionally bottom priced crop for a premium price, it also means a 95% reduction in co2 compared to fossil fuel, but don't let facts get in the way of your blind support of the fossil fuel industry.

I thought you wanted the worst polluters to do something about it?  The EU is the 3rd worst polluter yet when they start doing something about it you criticise them for it, what is it that you actually want, or is it just to criticise no matter what?

  Nice ........

But Climate Change and Global Warming is so dangerous that we must do something NOW ! !

....and you want to ignore China and attack the U.S.

Hey.... makes sense to me...  LOL    5555555   ????

No, I don't want to ignore anyone, it was you who wanted to ignore Western countries and concentrate on India and Africa, remember?  You seemed to think it was pointless to pressure America and even took the mere idea of doing so as an attack on Western civilisation, remember?  The US is the 2nd largest producer in the world, remember?  Its all here for everyone to read, remember?
