A soldier gives a briefing about suspected perpetrators of a recent ambush Sunday in Pattani province.

PATTANI — Some residents in the southern province of Pattani say they’re intimidated by an ongoing army search for suspected separatists behind a recent deadly attack.

While the military defended the manhunt for those behind last week’s ambush which left two rangers dead, locals living in Nong Chik district told the media they fear indiscriminate arrests and reprisals from security forces.

LOCALS IN parts of Pattani’s Nong Chik district are now living in fear due to the strong military presence in their hometown.

“We are scared and don’t want to leave our home these days,” said Nuda, whose husband has been under military custody since Sunday.

In an unprecedented move, the Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 declared tambons Bang Khao and Tha Kham Cham of Nong Chik district as “special control zones” on Sonday.

Residents in these zones are required to produce any weapons, ammunition and vehicles, including boats and motorcycles, they may possess for military examination at the Nong Chik District Office. They have until Sunday to do so.

“We have no idea what will happen next. The soldiers have been keeping a close eye on people going in and out of the village,” Nuda added.

The forward command has taken drastic action in response to a recent attack on six rangers. On the night of September 11, six rangers were patrolling Tambon Bang Khao when more than 10 unknown gunmen opened fire on them. Though outnumbered, the rangers fought back until the gunmen retreated. Two rangers were killed and four injured in the incident.

Survivors said their attackers had disappeared into the forest, giving weight to a possible theory that the attackers might be locals, as they appeared to be familiar with the area.

Following the attack, the military arrested eight suspects, including Nuda’s 28-year-old husband.

“I don’t believe he took part in the attack as he works in a local factory and rushes home after work every day,” she said.

Nuda explained that she and her husband were dining with their children at home on Sunday night when more than 30 armed soldiers showed up, scoured the house and led her husband away. “The soldiers took my husband around the house at gunpoint as they conducted a thorough search,” she recounted, adding that they even took away her phone, which made life difficult.

“I have been selling silk online to earn extra money for my family. Now I have lost all my contacts because the soldiers have my phone,” she said.

On Monday, she and some neighbours went to a local branch of the National Human Rights Commission to lodge a complaint and seek help.

“I hope my husband is protected. I am worried that he may be forced into confessing to a crime he did not do,” Nuda said.

Pornpen Kongkachornkiat, director of the Cross-Cultural Foundation, said she was worried about the blanket measures used by the military.

“It will only sow distrust,” she said. “I have nothing against the attack being investigated, but I disagree with the measures the military is using.”

She added that the order issued on Sunday has not been used in the deep South for more than a decade.

However, Fourth Army Region's chief Lt-General Piyawat Nakwanich, who signed the order just two weeks ahead of his retirement, defended the measures taken.

“We are implementing these measures for people’s safety. The claims of persecution are invalid as we have taken action based on evidence,” he explained.

He added that four of the suspects had confessed to the crime and provided details about the incident.

That really is a tough call on how to handle the situation. Hit and run guerilla tactics are the worst case scenario for any government trying to quell an insurrection or fight the local home grown terrorist.

Army commander threatens families of Southern militants

What a shame, knowing those militants do not threaten anyone, OK they just kill a few innocents people or put little bombs sometimes.

But the commander should understand that it makes sense to hide in his family, and just as logical for families to protect their loved ones. These soldiers are the same everywhere, impossible to practice terrorism quietly anywhere :whistling:Pffffff

I don't fully understand your comment, but here is what I believe, easiest why to create more unrest.... threaten their families... not a wise thing to do!

Clearly the insurgency is getting worse.

  • “We had never seen use of martial law powers like this. Usually it was only used to detain a person. But this is like detaining the entire district.”
  • “But a serious incident took place recently, and there are many militants and their sympathizers in the area. They have a strong presence in these two subdistricts."

“Right now we are preparing to intensify the laws. We might have to hold their parents, wives and relatives accountable as well,” Lt. Gen. Piyawat told reporters Monday. “I’d like to urge the perpetrators to reconsider their actions and cooperate with the state.”

This is potentially taking hostages and possible violation of the UN International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages, Article 1. http://hrlibrary.umn.edu/instree/takinghostages.html

Thailand is a State Party to the convention along with 174 other State members.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostages_Convention

If ISOC carries out with its threats of harm against southern Muslim civilian noncombatants, it will unlikely defuse the insurgency, increase insurgent recruitment, greater violence, widening civilian victims and widening of attacks into Central Thailand. The ISOC strategy sets clear that the military has no capability for a peace process.

No

I meant most of all those terrorists do hide in their families, later on,

So I thought the title was biased telling the army threatened the families, it is very difficult to find those guys without looking in the relative's houses because it is almost impossible the relatives do not know anything about their activities, so I tried irony, but as a non-native English speaker I guess I missed the target :ermm:

How many years have the thugs, radicals, separatist, peaceful Muslims etc etc been killing soldiers, nurses, doctors, people going to market ?... This was going on in 1973 as I ferried many a military consultant and assistant under secretary of state to the deep south to view bunkers and investigate the latest slayings.. So... Whatever has been tried for the last 45 years (or longer) has not worked.. Doing the same thing over and over again thinking you will get a different result is insanity.

If this was going on in communist China there would be people disappearing in the middle of the night and whole families sent to re-education camps or involuntarily assigned as an organ donors.. Kid yourself not

Thailand has been very patient with those in the south who want to commit murder and mayhem.

It is possible that eventually, the Thais will follow the example of the Burmese and eject all the followers of this evil medieval cult. Unless of course there is some serious self-policing amongst the Muslim community to eliminate the perpetrators of the violence. I will not hold my breath awaiting this. If they stop killing infidels and coexist peacefully then the problem is solved, otherwise, they will reap what they sow.

If you don't want to live in Thailand, and it goes for all, then you know where the border crossings or airports are. As for these followers of a religion started by a murdering pedophile that can't peacefully co-exist with anyone...pfft, as mentioned, you reap what you sow. The only reason there is this problem everywhere is because those within this religion refuse to denounce the action of the extreme types and in many cases tacitly condone it. Wherever you find Muslims you have serious problems and conflict due to their intolerance. Nuff said...not as if most people don't privately know it.

Just leave them alone.

They were doing fine until Buddhist Thailand forcibly annexed the areas of the Muslim Sultanate of Patani.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patani

Sure leave them alone so they can breed a larger military force of separatist. Name one country where that has worked ? It does work if you want to turn the whole country into a bastion of Sunni 7th century beliefs.

The bigger their population becomes the more strident their demand. Thankfully many in positions of power have looked at history and can add two plus two. War is hell if you are on the losing side.. Patani is part of Thailand so either accept that fact or suffer the consequences when their peaceful B.S rhetoric and bombs/bullets kill citizens . Muhammad laid out the game plan which to this very day is being tried in many countries. Just some people also know his written plan of the end result and will do all they can to stop it.

Quote: As long as the Muslim population remains around or under 2% in any given country, they.

will be for the most part be regarded as a peace-loving minority, and not as a threat to other citizens. This is the case in:

United States -- Muslim 0.6%.
Australia -- Muslim 1.5%.
Canada -- Muslim 1.9%.
China -- Muslim 1.8%.
Italy -- Muslim 1.5%.
Norway -- Muslim 1.8%.

At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs. This is happening in:

Denmark -- Muslim 2%.
Germany -- Muslim 3.7%.
United Kingdom -- Muslim 2.7%.
Spain -- Muslim 4%.
Thailand -- Muslim 4.6%.

From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature halal on their shelves -- along with threats for.

failure to comply. This is occurring in:

France -- Muslim 8%.
Philippines -- Muslim 5%.
Sweden -- Muslim 5%.
Switzerland -- Muslim 4.3%.
The Netherlands -- Muslim 5.5%.
Trinidad & Tobago -- Muslim 5.8%.

At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves (within their ghettos) under Sharia, the Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islamists is to establish Sharia law over the entire world.

When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase lawlessness as a.

means of complaint about their conditions. In Paris, we are already seeing car-burnings.

Any non-Muslim action offends Islam, and results in uprisings and threats, such as in Amsterdam, with opposition to Mohammed cartoons and films about Islam. Such tensions

are seen daily, particularly in Muslim sections, in:

Guyana -- Muslim 10%.
India -- Muslim 13.4%.
Israel -- Muslim 16%.
Kenya -- Muslim 10%.
Russia -- Muslim 15%.

After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations,

sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues, such as in:

Ethiopia -- Muslim 32.8%.

At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing.

militia warfare, such as in:

Bosnia -- Muslim 40%.
Chad -- Muslim 53.1%.
Lebanon -- Muslim 59.7%.

From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of all other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon, and Jizya, the tax placed on infidels, such as in:

Albania -- Muslim 70%.
Malaysia -- Muslim 60.4%.
Qatar -- Muslim 77.5%.
Sudan -- Muslim 70%.

After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run ethnic cleansing, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim, such as has been experienced and in some ways is on-going in:

Bangladesh -- Muslim 83%.
Egypt -- Muslim 90%.
Gaza -- Muslim 98.7%.
Indonesia -- Muslim 86.1%.
Iran -- Muslim 98%.
Iraq -- Muslim 97%.
Jordan -- Muslim 92%.
Morocco -- Muslim 98.7%.
Pakistan -- Muslim 97%.
Palestine -- Muslim 99%.
Syria -- Muslim 90%.
Tajikistan -- Muslim 90%.
Turkey -- Muslim 99.8%.
United Arab Emirates -- Muslim 96%.

100% will usher in the peace of 'Dar-es-Salaam' -- the Islamic House of Peace. Here there's supposed to be peace, because everybody is a Muslim, the Madrasses are the only schools,

and the Koran is the only word, such as in:

Afghanistan -- Muslim 100%.
Saudi Arabia -- Muslim 100%.
Somalia -- Muslim 100%.
Yemen -- Muslim 100%.

Unfortunately, peace is never achieved, as in these 100% states the most radical Muslims intimidate and spew hatred, and satisfy their blood lust by killing less radical Muslims, for.

a variety of reasons.

'Before I was nine I had learned the basic canon of Arab life. It was me against my brother;.

me and my brother against our father; my family against my cousins and the clan; the clan against the tribe; the tribe against the world, and all of us against the infidel. -- Leon Uris,

'The Haj'

It is important to understand that in some countries, with well under 100% Muslim populations, such as France, the minority Muslim populations live in ghettos, within which.

they are 100% Muslim, and within which they live by Sharia Law. The national police do not even enter these ghettos. There are no national courts, nor schools, nor non-Muslim religious facilities. In such situations, Muslims do not integrate into the community at large. The children attend madrasses. They learn only the Koran. To even associate with an infidel is a crime punishable with death. Therefore, in some areas of certain nations, Muslim Imams and extremists exercise more power than the national average would indicate.

Today's 1.5 billion Muslims make up 22% of the world's population. But their birth rates dwarf the birth rates of Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and all other believers. Muslims will exceed 50% of the world's population by the end of this century.

Credit to Chester Harmony.  End Quote
Some of the numbers are old as the populations in the given countries have increased.. But... The game plan is the same where ever you look.
