I have a valid non-immigrant visa in my current British passport, valid until 5th November. I'm going back to the UK on 2nd October for a few weeks holiday. I already have my re-entry permit. My current passport doesn't expire until 2023 but it's running out of pages. So while in the UK I will be getting a new passport as I only have 4 blank pages left on my current one.

My question is, will my visa still be valid in my old passport after I get the new one? On entry back to Thailand, would I show them both passports?

Visas, extensions of stay and re-entry permits all remain valid in the old passport.

You will use both passports when you enter the country to use the re-entry permit in your old passport.

Is it actually a real, genuine McCoy multi-entry visa along the lines of the illustration below that will be expiring on 5th November? If it is and you are planning to return to Thailand on or before this date, you have wasted your time in obtaining a re-entry permit which won't be needed in your case!

Number of entry "S" means single entry, not multiple entry. You have presumably since entering Thailand and getting the initial 90-day entry, been getting one-year extensions of stay for which you have a multiple entry reentry permit. The original visa was used long ago, and no longer has any relevance. Anyway, you will be readmitted until the expiry date specified on the reentry permit, and will need to apply for a further extension.

If what you say is correct (and I don't doubt that it is), then this is IMHO yet another instance where the use of incorrect terminology on the OP's part has caused unnecessary confusion - for me at least! Maybe those who see nothing wrong in referring to an extension of stay as a visa could point me in the direction of a suitably reliable crystal ball to enable me to seek clarity on this issue since I can't find any on Lazada!

EDIT: Upon reflection, it might have been better if I had used an actual multi-entry visa for illustrative purposes!

Sorry to jump in. Can this be done until the Visa expires? I enter this time with my passport which is low on pages.  My Non-O-Multi based on marriage is valid until Feb. I will go to Trendy this time home for a New UK Passport. Can I continue to use the visa using both passports until I head for Savannakhet for a new Visa? Thanks and sorry once again for jumping into your thread.

Yes you can. You could use it to get the last entry from it on or before the date it expires.

You might be aware or might not be aware but if your multi expires in Feb' a day or two before it's enter/use by date you can do a border run and get another 90 days taking you to May sometime. During the last week or two you can go to your local Imm' and extend that last 90 by another 60 days meaning you can go to Sav' sometime in July for your next multi O.

Means your 12 months visa can last a couple of days short of 17 months.

I suggest it is you that is causing confusion. The OP clearly has an extension of stay OR time remaining on a visa entry they want to protect with a re-entry permit. It doesn't matter which it is, the answer to the OP's question is the same and given by UJ in post 2.

My money is on them having a non-immigrant visa, that they used to get an extension of stay, that they are protecting with a re-entry permit. The non-immigrant visa in the old passport is still relevant (until the details are transferred to the new passport) even if used/expired, so the OP is correct to ask the question. Most people, rightly, consider the combination of the entry visa and subsequent stay permits (entry or extensions) to be their visa.

Yes, I have used this method before but only when it works into my offshore rotation. Unfortunately this time it doesn't, but that means next year it probably will.

I just did this on my return to Thailand.approx 3 weeks ago Arrived at Bangkok with both passports 1 year extension of stay & reentry permit, checked visa & reentry stamped me in on my new passport no problem. Went to have my visa transferred to new passport & the old chestnut of needing a letter from passport authority to verify that they had issued me new passport & canceled old one. Seeing the old one had the cover cut off I thought that was a give away.

I was under the impression this was not needed anymore but apparently it is. went to the agent next door ( Jomtien Soi 5 ) & for 5 k they took my passport & sorted it all out for me. Usually i would have gone & got the correct paperwork but only had 7 days in Thailand & didn't feel like spending any more time at immigration than I had to.

There is a form at immigration for having visa's changed between passports but as far as I can make out still need the letter. Who knows as different strokes for different folks.
