Needed to go and get a residency letter this morning from immigration to buy a motor bike. Same ridiculous deal. Go to transport office first. Give them all of my details. They give me a letter to go to immigration and give them all the same info and copies so they can give me another letter to give back to transport. Keeps everyone in a job I guess ????

What was different was they called me in for an interview with a policeman. Asked me all sorts of questions about why I came to Thailand, how long Ive been here (4 years), have a wife or not. What did I work back home etc. Nice enough guy but made me feel uncomfortable. Got a few residence letters in the past and never copped that. FInally hit me up for a "processing fee". Used to do that in my office up until about 3 years ago but stopped a long time ago. I know it's not mandatory but happy to pay the dosh and keep in the good books.

Whats the go with all that? Anyone else had the same thing? Quite a lot of talk lately about Imm cracking down on farang here...going through the schools etc. Is it a process they are doing now or a random thing or a horse and pony show to ask for the moulah?

I bought a new bike about 5 years ago. And another new bike a couple of months ago. I was never asked to provide such a letter...

Is the paperwork of the new bike in your name?

Probably because you provided your yellow house book

@op:

You don't have to go to the DLT first, you can go straight to the immigration office to get a certificate of residence

The questioning was indeed strange, and i did never hear of anything like that

Yes, it's in my name. I live in Bangkok, have a Non-B visa and a work permit. That is what they wanted to see.

Both were big official motorcycle dealers - not just small shops around the corner.

Yes. Always put in my name. Been here 4 years and bought around 8 new and used vehicles. Needed a residents letter everytime. The first few times id go straight to immigration, get the letter then back to transport office. Last 2 years u need to go to immigration office first...take that to immigration then immigration issue the letter. Then back to transport. Its ridiculous

That might be true where u live mate...but not where I am. My immigration will give residence letters for somethings but vehicles need to go to transport first. In all cases dealing with govt departments here..whats correct or legal procedure doesnt come into it. Its up to what the office or indeed the person ur dealing with asks u to do
