An ancient bell tower collapsed during its restoration at a Bangkok temple shortly before noon on Tuesday, injuring 11 workers.

Of them, three had serious injuries. They were now being treated at the Siriraj Hospital.

The collapse occurred during a restoration project of the Fine Arts Department at the Phraya Tham Temple in Bangkok’s Bangkok Noi district.

“We have already received the report and we will find out what caused the accident,” said Fine Arts Department director-general Anandha Chuchoti.

Awarded to Priyakij Co Ltd, the Bt8.65-million project began on May 18. An engineer from the department has overseen the work.

This bell tower is believed to have been several centuries old, with an unusual shape and design.

It has been registered as a historical site.

Take a good look at the construction and you will see and know it.

The RTP have already sought warrants in order to exhume the architects.

Good job that the Italians  left the stabilization of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to the British  rather than these guys.

I'd be leaving this one, to the Thai's.

Unusual to have an engineer in a Fine Arts Dept. Maintenance chappie perhaps? ????

I guess it means the FAD hired an outside engineer in reality, or at least I hope so.

Rescue personnel lift an injured worker Tuesday from the debris of a collapsed temple bell tower in west Bangkok.

BANGKOK — A bell tower under renovation at an old Bangkok temple collapsed Tuesday, killing one and injuring 11.

Police on Wednesday said charges related to fatal negligence are being weighed against the head of construction at Wat Phraya Tham in the capital’s Bangkok Noi district, where the 15-meter tower’s spire fell onto workers while they were raising it at about 1:30pm.

No idea of safety measures such as under pinning especially while working on a very old structure. Nevermind. Plenty more manual workers from where they came from. RIP the dead and a full recovery for those injured. Will they be fully compensated for their injuries and loss of income. I hope so, but I have my doubts.

Don't talk any dead up

Sorry my man I now see we have one dead

Based on the going rate, I'd say about 30,000b ought to cover it -- for the entire group of 11.

Less if any of the 11 happen to be from Laos, Cambodia or Myanmar, as is often the case with physical labor jobs.

Been quite a few years since my Construction Safety Engineer duties but it would seem that scaffolding and more detailed planning should have been in place before this task was undertaken. RIP dead and injured.
