Whether Club Med Phuket should be allowed to continue the land rental agreement goes to the vote. Photo: PR Dept

PHUKET:-- It has been confirmed that Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO, or OrBorJor) council members have agreed to extend the rental agreement on land it rents to Club Med (Holiday Villages Thailand Limited) for a further 15 years and at a cost of B45 million per year.

Club Med (Holiday Villages Thailand Limited) have rented the land from the Phuket OrBorJor since 1985.

Phuket Council members agreed the extension of the land rental agreement, which expired on Sept 25, at a meeting held at the PPAO headquarters at 10am yesterday (Sept 26).

"OK let's see the hands of everybody who helped with the land office scam on this deal. OK. Good job everybody!"

I wonder how many points each of these guys get on the 45 million?  I wonder what kind of backhanders went into the negotiation besides the land they gave up for the park they built?

That place always pissed me off as they try to chase people away from the beach in front of the property saying it is a private beach.

The beach in front of the property is almost the whole of Kata Beach!

Never experienced any such issues personally, and as the middle of Kata Beach, not far from the Club Med entrance is the least busy section, it's where I'd usually go.

Same here, no issues. I also like the property because it is low rise and green, and it's presence prevented high rise properties from building and a concrete jungle from appearing.

Given Phuket's rapid change over the last few years, that's a big call by Club Med.

Perhaps they would have been better going for a 5 year x 3 option.

Who know's what Phuket will be like 5 years from now, let alone 15 years from now.

Club Med is now Chinese-owned. They know what they're doing!

I didn't know that.

It appears the Chinese Fosun International group owns it.

When they get a casino here, they will be set.  ????

Still, one can only wonder what Phuket will look like 5 years from now, given such rapid change over the last 3 years.

Also, the Chinese economy, and their leadership, can be unpredictable at times.

It's a nice resort, but step outside of the resort and you are still on Phuket, with it's failing infrastructure, and declining beach water quality.  Something that would be hard to sell to middle to higher end Chinese tourists.

This is just not true .... the do have their own sun loungers etc on the beach for guest use but don't deny access to the actual sand..

And what allows all the beach chair vendors to do this - payment to the local authority.

Didn't the local Kata Karon guy that got caught red handed with selling off the beach chair areas for huge sums of money get off?

Correct, and it's probably that same corrupt payment that stops non-guests of the hotel laying down a towel near the sunbeds and "sharing" the beach with hotel guests.

That might have been the case on many other beaches but that was never the case on Kata Beach. Even before the chair ban there was always plenty of open space on Kata Beach.
