Thai government should act to stop Thais using images of "Mr Hitler"

Picture: Sanook

Sanook reported that foreign media was laying into the Thais for knowing nothing about history in the furor about a short time sex room in Nonthaburi having images of Adolf Hitler on the walls.

By way of explanation to people who may not have heard of him Sanook referred to him as Nai Adolf Hitler (Mr Hitler) who ordered the murder of millions of Jewish people in World War Two while head of the Nazi party.

They said that The Sun in the UK and the Jerusalem Post and lots of other media were condemning the Thais for their lack of knowledge of history.

A rabbi and a tourist quoted in the stories were calling on the Thai government to do something about it and get the people educated.

Sanook reported that the Hitler room - earlier reported as a "Communist" room with two Hitler images on the wall - was not the only themed room at the shorty in Nonthaburi.

They reported that the establishment - known as "maan rute" or curtain hotel in Thai - had a variety of other choices including a "War" room.

There were also rooms with Japanese, Indian, Cowboy and Hollywood themes.

In addition there was a "Love Boat" room and two that might be popular with movie fans - The Matrix Room and the Spiderman Room.

Hell, Thai don't even known their own history, the true version, let alone world history.

WWII is not just the history of Europe, hence the term WORLD WAR.

  • But Thailand and Germany were allies during Hitler's lifetime so perhaps they may have a different viewpoint than the Western world.

Why should they care about the history of Europe?

Whoever built a multi-million baht hotel like this is not an uneducated person. They would have known - and if they didn't Wikipedia takes two minutes to read - that Hitler was a monster who started a war that killed millions of people and ordered the genocide of an entire race.

My guess is that they knew what he did, but because it was committed ''only against farangs'' they, like most Thais, simply don't care. It's not a sign of their lack of education, but shows how little value Thais hold for lives, especially the lives of foreigners.

As always, the history is written by the 'winners'.

If they don't care about the history of Europe then why bother at all to put it in hotel rooms?

If you are going to theme a room on another continent’s history, then you should learn about it first.

My adopted Thai daughter was a Senior at Varee when that took place.  She was horrified and walked out, refusing to have anything to do with it.  When she came home, the first thing she did was to tell me: "Dad, I didn't have anything to do with what you'll see on the news about my school."

You're thinking of another room, where they all live happily ever after.

Yes, but it's enormous. In fact it's called the Big Suc room, after the song.

Don't you get it? It's just a PR/publicity stunt with the goal of making as much as possible of the all important Baht.

Anyone using nazi regalia to promote their product are filth.

To say it’s just a publicity stunt doesn’t fly.

There is no excuse, don’t use what you don’t know of.

They appear to be making a very valid point. Knowingly or not...

Or perhaps 16 years before that, the anniversary of which is tomorrow.

Quite a few Thais are aware of at least some of the history of that one.

Would there be the same outcry if they would have put a portrait of Stalin on the wall ?

Indeed. And many Thais fought partisan actions against the Japanese or risked all by sabotaging the Jap war effort.

Many Europeans don't bother with the Asian perspective on history.

The wearing of Che T shirts and other emblems of him needs to go as well. Far from being a revolutionary hero he was for the most part a mere executioner, a self confessed rapist of his parents servants, and a racist.
