Loving by the rules

The Culture Ministry has launched the '10 Commandments of Love' in an attempt to prevent teenagers getting too carried away on Valentine's Day. They are:

1. Love with patience, so as not to become a premature parent

2. Truly love only one person

3. Love with mercy, trying not to hurt the one you love

4. Carefully love to avoid taking risks that might lead to contracting sexual diseases

5. Love with honour, waiting until the proper time to have sex

6. Love in accordance with custom

7. Love reasonably, not taking sexual advantage of your lover

8. Love permanently, without defaming the one you love

9. Love honestly, believing in your partner

10. Love with understanding, forgiveness and without anger

Culture Minister Khunying Khaisri Sri-aroon said the initiative followed research suggesting that teenagers have premature sex, more than one partner and live together without commitment. "The commandments remind them that real love does not mean sex," she said.

Dr Amornwit Nakhonthap, director of Ramjitti Institute, said society should allow teenagers the space to learn about loving, and the best way to persuade them to be morally upright was to rely on sensible pressure from their peers.

I am beginning to think the Culture Ministry is just one of the jobs created so another crony could be on the take. Intentions are good and sincere, but the days of “leave it to Beaver” have long sense faded into black and white tv memories. It is a bit sad in a way they these values need to be reminded in what should come natural in a genuine loving relationship.

#4 reflects a bit of reality that suggests ‘It’s OK to stray as long as you stray safe.’

1. Love with patience, so as not to become a premature parent

It is acceptable to let the lady come first (she won't become pregnant

if she does- this is misinf).

2. Truly love only one person

No group sex

3. Love with mercy, trying not to hurt the one you love

No rough sex

4. Carefully love to avoid taking risks that might lead to contracting sexual diseases

Wear a condom

5. Love with honour, waiting until the proper time to have sex

Close the room door first

6. Love in accordance with custom

Missionary position only

7. Love reasonably, not taking sexual advantage of your lover

Rape is frowned upon

8. Love permanently, without defaming the one you love

Love her "long time" and don't brag to the whole bloody world afterwards.

9. Love honestly, believing in your partner

Wear a bloody condom you twit , don't tell her you'll pull it out

in time and if she says she's a virgin she is OK?

10. Love with understanding, forgiveness and without anger

Can't make this one out. If she wants to make love say you understand , it's OK

and no , you are not angry ?

6, Thai custom anyone! All those harems, concubines, mia nois, barber shops etc. Leaves plenty of scope! Or is the minister being selective (blind) about custom?

9, I believe you darling, honestly, now hurry up and boom boom before the love police come.

Well, I think these are good advise for those who are new in this field. It should act as a precautionary measure and to avoid unnecessary problems.

For those who are making fun of it, just think about your daughters (if you have any) and she falls for a wrong guy and has to go through the mental trauma. (No offense intended though).

I believe that some of the guys are thinking of sex only. For me love can be without sex and though not very much preferred. I believe that a person should have sex with only the person (s)he loves.

BGs and other girls on the game r exceptions though. :D

Be nice and appreciate the suggestions. (Though Thais can have double standards most of the time) :o

We don't need Khunying Khaisri to teach our daughter anything. My wife and I are taking care of that, thank you very much.

A few rules for teens to love by--Thai Culture Ministry

Thailand's Culture Ministry has issued what it calls the "10 Commandments of Love" to encourage teens not to get too carried away with romance while celebrating Valentine's Day.

The first commandment: "Love with patience, so as not to become a young parent."

No. 4 urges youths to love carefully "to avoid the risk of sexually transmitted diseases."

"When you are young and in love you lack experience and can't tell the difference between love and lust," Culture Ministry official Ladda Tangsuphachai said Monday. "We want to provide some guidance."

"We just want to remind people, especially young people, to value love," she said.

Sex isn't the only subject broached by the commandments, which were released Sunday. No. 2 deals with monogamy ("Love only one person"). Others encourage couples to respect, trust and forgive each other.

Despite concerns that more Thai teens are engaging in premarital sex, a recent poll suggested that Valentine's Day was not to blame.

Thirty-eight percent of females polled said they would refuse sexual advances if their boyfriends made any attempts on Valentine's Day, while 16.4 percent said they would consent to sex. Twenty-nine percent were undecided and the rest declined to answer the question.

The ABAC poll, conducted for Assumption University, surveyed 10-to-24-year-olds in the Bangkok area earlier this month.

Public Health Ministry is concerned over teenage sexual trends

Public Health Minister Mongkol Na Songkhla expressed his concern after a survey reported that a number of young people had their first sexual intercourse at 15 years of age on average and 35 percent of those did not wear condoms.

Talking about the measures to protect people from contracting sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, Md. Mongkol said over 90,000 teenagers in Thailand are infected by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus. According to a survey last year, 36 percent of the male vocational students and 28 percent of the female vocational students in 20 provinces nationwide already had sex, and many of them had their first sex at the age of 15. Moreover, only 35 percent of the respondents used condoms.

Therefore, the Ministry of Public Health has set a target to reduce the number of newly infected AIDS patients this year to no more than 12,000 people. Campaigns will be introduced to promote the usage of condoms, and local officials will be encouraged to support the campaigns. 20 million condoms will be distributed to teenagers throughout the country.

More importantly, the ministry will educate more young people about AIDS through different media. For instance, AIDS campaigns will be promoted through the wallpapers, video clips and ring tones of mobile phones. The purpose is to change youths’ behaviors and persuade them to protect and value themselves without falling into the unconstructive trends.

Thai teens keen for Valentine's Day sex

A third of Thai teenage girls think Valentine's Day is an excellent time to lose their virginity, and police in Bangkok are out to stop them.

Police in the capital, famous around the world for its fleshpots, will enforce a 10 p.m. curfew on February 14 after a poll of teenagers was published last week.

Love-struck teenagers would be sent home or taken to a police station to wait for their parents to fetch them on Wednesday night, Bangkok Deputy Police Chief Kamol Kaewsuwan said.

"Love is nice and beautiful, but it does not necessarily involve sexual engagement. Teenagers would do better focusing on school," Kamol said of the curfew.

Police would also be on the look out for public displays of affection by under-18 youths hanging out in shopping malls, cinemas and other entertainment venues on Valentine's Day.

"Hugging and kissing in public places are indecent," said Police Colonel Chokechai Deeprasertvith, who heads a special unit to fight crimes against children, youths and women.

The Assumption University poll of 1,578 teenagers published last week found one third of teenage girls were willing to have sex on Valentine's Day if their boyfriends asked.

Another survey of 1,222 youths by the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce found 11 percent planned to lose their virginity on Wednesday night. Nearly 51 percent said they would not have sex.

It's not the first time predominantly Buddhist Thailand has tried a social order crusade popular with the middle class, many of whom are uncomfortable with public sexuality and support moves to rein in anything-goes Bangkok.

A short-lived 2004 morality campaign under former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra cut the operating hours of go-go bars, nightclubs and massage parlors despite warnings it would hit the country's lucrative tourist trade.

Recently, university student and budding movie starlet Chotiros Suriyawong was rebuked for wearing a revealing sexy black dress to Thailand's version of the Oscars.

"Society feels this is a disgrace and her actions have affected the reputation of this university," Suraphol Nitikraipot, rector of the prestigious Thammasat University, was quoted as saying by the Nation newspaper on Tuesday

Thai Cops on Alert for Underage Kissing

A word of advice to young Thai lovers on Valentine's Day: No kissing in public. Bangkok police say they plan to protect underage couples from the sting of Cupid's arrow, and will crack down on what is deemed to be "inappropriate" behavior.

Patrols will start after school hours in "high-risk areas," like public parks, shopping malls and restaurants and expand in the evening to include nightclubs, bars and so-called love motels, which rent small rooms for short periods of time, said Police Lt. Vorawat Amornviwat of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

"If we find teenagers below 18 engaged in inappropriate behavior like kissing, we will give them warnings and report to their parents so they can pick them up," he said. "Alcohol is definitely a catalyst for this kind of behavior, so we will keep an eye on underage drinking."

The Metropolitan Police force has also asked nightclub and bar owners to help by turning away underage customers.

"These places are not meant for kids," he said, adding that Valentine's Day required extra vigilance "because they seem to be more vulnerable to sexual temptations on this particular night."

The crackdown on public displays of affection is the latest effort to balance the country's look-the-other-way tolerance with Buddhist values of modesty and manners.

Over the weekend, the Culture Ministry issued what it called the "10 Commandments of Love" to encourage teens not to engage in sexual activities while celebrating Valentine's Day. The first commandment: "Love with patience, so as not to become a young parent." No. 4 urges youths to love carefully "to avoid the risk of sexually transmitted diseases."

I'm glad they put this in the paper....it certainly will discourage boys from pressuring their girlfriends for sex on Valentines Day!!! hahahhahahha

Wow, 49% must be hopeing for some action on THE day. Any boy who strikes out should get two girlfriends by next Valentines Day and then he should be pretty sure of a score.

Are these people actually promoting sex on Valentines Day?....sure seems like it....keeping the focus right there on the libido and publishing statistics that almost scream "GO FOR IT."

This topic would be hilariously funny if it wasn't so sad that the reason behind it all, unwanted pregnancy, sexual assaults, rape, and the life-changing experiences that these bring to women are not so prevalent in Thailand.

Come to think of it; it is pretty high amongst a certain social grouping in Britain.

Here here and it is wrong to knock the government just because they wish to raise morals. I just hope that the police will diligently collect evidence of naughty wrong doings by using their phone cams and post in on the net so as to prove to everyone that they have real evidence.

Ministry of Culture asks couples not to over-display actions of love during Valentine's Day

The Minister of Culture has asked couples, especially teenagers, to exercise rational displays of affection.

The Minister of Culture, Khunying Khaisri Sri-arun (ไขศรี ศรีอรุญ), said that the ideas practiced on Valentine's Day may be compared to religious principles that teach love, good conduct, and selflessness. Khunying Khaisri said that these values would encourage peace, but young lovers would need to adhere to correct values in their celebration of Valentine's Day. She stressed that youths would need restraint, perseverance, morals, caution, respect, and rational displays of affection in their relationships.

The Minister of Culture also disagreed with the Valentine Day norm of intercourse between lovers. Khunying Khaisri said that couples could give other gifts besides sex. She added that youths should follow religious principles, family values, and proper behavior.
