Farang musicians

Featured Replies

Can anybody answer definitively what is the situation since the recent relaxation of work permits, on foreign musicians (both resident in Thailand or visiting) being permitted to work. Musicians are not included in the list of proscribed occupations, which I take to mean that they now have the green light.

  • I think the world famous musicians who come to Thailand to perform one or a few concerts get some variation of the 'Urgent Work Permit' applied for by the concert promoter for maximum 15 days

  • Never heard of those names. But as you mentioned "world famous", the idea of brown envelopes spring to mind.

  • There are lots of famous world famous musicians who have previously had their concert tours in Thailand, Eg. Iyaz, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Justin Beiber (yuck). Wonder if they all get work permits before play

Green light for what? They still need a work permit but if they have one they can work anywhere.

So many now seem to believe that somehow they can just go and get a work permit and go travelling Thailand and work wherever they want.

The requirements to get a work permit haven't changed regarding Non Imm' visa or extension and company sponsoring you etc etc.

If a company gets you a WP as an engineer in Rayong does that mean you can go and play your guitar and sing in a pub/club in Udon using the same WP? How would you get paid, cash in hand, invoice with the Rayong company name??

The new work permit doesn't have the name of the company on it anymore.

There are obviously special arrangements for professionals in that position!

True.

But somehow I don't see it being used as a 'free lancer's' WP to let you wander Thailand working where and when you feel like it.

I see it being used to allow an employee to work in different locations by the employer who sponsored the WP in the first place, eg, a school has branches in BKK, Chonburi and Udon so the teachers can work in any one of those areas no matter where the WP was issued. What notification to what office would be required in the new area of work I don't know.

That's what I just posted. But for some reason you was/were (spelling, grammar nazis are welcomed) confused.

Do you have some more info about that? Maybe links or pictures?

I had my work permit just renewed, maybe a month ago, and it still has the company name, etc.

It has been reported that a recently issued work permit did not have the company name on them.

Since you got an extension of a existing one that would be why it still has the company name on it.

Thanks, I just read the link after I posted the question...

But I don't think Justin Bieber could get a regular long-term work permit because then he would be taking work away from all the Thai musicians who think they are Justin Bieber.

Nobody can really be worse than Bieber...

Sounds like a similar issue some of the diving instructors were having.  WP said their building, but of course they needed to go to a Pool or the ocean some where to train and teach.  As I recall, they definitely were not legally allowed to go to another city or province.  Maybe WPs are now more generalized along the lines you mentioned

Many years ago I was working on a construction job that had work sub-contracted out in several places in Thailand. The company had to get each area noted in my WP. How that was done/reported I'm not sure.

The new system seems to address that problem.

Yes it does, along with their address. To be clear, that's the Digital Work Permit (not the old book one), one of which I have.

That was not what you posted, you posted some facetious remark about bribery.  If you did say the same thing, then quote it and prove my "confusion"...if you can.

Chiang Mai Labor Office, Chang Phueak.

Thank you - that is something authoritative while most other responses are just guesswork and well meaning opinions. I suppose we can find the actual rules somewhere in Thai government's website?

Perhaps a work permit agent who reads this can throw some light on the current situation for musos.

They now issue Digital Work Permits for Digital nomads working online? ????????????????????????

Thai immigration is not known for doing anything positive towards farangs.

So I would just forget about any sort of "new" work permit.

I wouldn't worry about that. Just Weird spends the most of his time here on Thaivisa being confused.????
