Where have they gone - from Asoke

Those walking down Sukhumvit at Asoke could not miss the various gentlemen and ladies of African persuasion, approaching passers by, offering to sell various items, some of not an entirely legal nature. One got used to their approaches.

However, I was shocked at their absence recently, and what a pleasure it is to walk down the pavement unmolested.

 

Have these fine and upstanding citizens, so respectful of Thai law, moved somewhere else, or perhaps been encouraged to return home by a more enthusiastic police?

They were rounded up. Most went to Pataya where there is no shortage and good riddance

Maybe....but how long until they come back ? Nothing is sustainable in Thailand and neither is enforcing the law.

 

The Africains harassing people was one issue, but what about all the other western drunk rowdies, con swindlers, financial cheats, perhaps some wanted criminals or other trouble makers ? They also would deserve some deeper screening and have the rotten apples given a one way ticket back home.

Maybe I can come back to BKK for a visit. I quit going a few years ago because these guys had changed the atmosphere of Sukhumvit. If they are gone I may come back to see how it is now. Thanks for the post

Most of the Nigerians men and loosely termed "women " have been hanging out the front of the new 5 star Hyatt regency corner soi 13 because it's been pitch black there for years and they blend in

The regency opens its doors in a few months lighting up the area and brown envelope if necessary for the bib to round up the few remaining dealers

I do not wish to impugn the good intent of any female who happens to loiter around the shadows of Sukhumvit looking at passing men with seductive looks, whether they happen to originate.

I naturally assumed that these friendly females were part of a charity involved in providing assistance to weary travellers, and any money given was a donation for their cause.

 

One must applaud the sacrifice of these brave and noble individuals, and support their charitable endeavours with both cash and private time.

Not to do so would be rude.

Last week I saw a head-turning black woman latish and, as is my wont, said to her in a cheery voice, You ma'am are gorgeous. She was taken aback momentarily but then replied in a perfect New York accent, Thank you, but the tone of voice and look in her eyes indicated that I needed to move on, which I quickly did.

 

Ditto for the guys. So don't make assumptions based on skin color.

Up until August their favourite area was of course congregating around The Sofitel just down from Asoke.With them and the the overflow from the desperados' flowing out from Therma..God only knows what the tourists staying there must have thought.Can;t believe it was allowed to go on for as long as it did!

The Africans up to no good in Bangkok stand out totally different from the tourist of African decent.  For one they wouldn’t walk up to a stranger saying ‘ hey honey’ or ‘ wats up’.  Dress sense is another obvious give away, let alone the non loitering of tourists.
