Can Thailand lure the Chinese back?

After half a decade of incredible growth in Chinese tourism to Thailand, the numbers are now in a tail-spin as numbers drop off around the country.

 

With annual rises of 20-50% per annum for half a decade there has been a big drop off in the last quarter (Q3) of 2018. This is the key statistic as compiled in two reports, one from Standard Chartered Bank and another from the Kasikorn Research Centre.

 

The numbers were peaking, even in the middle of the traditional wet-season this year, until a tour boat sank in Phuket during early July, resulting in the death of 47 Chinese tourists, many of them children. The subsequent ‘investigation’, botched PR attempts, mis-speaks from the deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan and the power of Chinese social media have seen the Chinese pursuing other locations for their travels.

The Chinese are very fickle tourists and will not travel to any country where there has been any  problems and move on without a second thought to the next country and make an ass of themselves there .

I can't help it, but somehow I find the word choice of "lure" in this headline rather unfortunate. It makes me feel very uneasy and suspicious. Isn't that exactly the same term a conman would use when describing how he hooks his victims?

Exactly my thought. Lure them or bait them... but by no means try attract them or entice them back to the country. 

Make shitting in the street legal they will be back in droves

There's a huge amount of understandable negativity towards Chinese tourists, they were bred and educated to be be peasant wage slaves for the most part, they had no say in this, just like most of us. Their education system has not prepared them to travel and mingle with people more fortunate than themselves, to be polite, it does show 

Most are good people who want to see a little of the world and escape from the places they have not been allowed to leave before, its only in very recent times they have been allowed to travel, for many its probably their first chance to breathe fresh air (in between cigarettes!) 

Truth be known, most would rather stay in China and travel therein, but it is prohibitively expensive for them, Thailand is far cheaper.

They are doing a great job of repatriating Chinese goods back to the homeland where they are not on sale, export only, that's why they load up on all the "tack" 

At heart, they are decent people, don't be so down on them

Yep, the immigration department in the mean time have acquired new staff and told them, "next time don't get caught in demandng immigration money under the table."

Butbut... weren't these the high spending quality tourists?

When I see Chinese in a restaurant or massage place I do not go in.

 

I have nothing against them personally (perhaps the usual idiots will start claiming racism)  but I do not want to listen to people shout at their phones, shout at each other, shout at the staff. 
 

Yesterday I had to tell a Chinese, shouting on her phone in a massage place, to shut up.

 

I have pushed them out of the way when they try to push in line, and shoved them out of the way when trying to get off an elevator and told them to be quiet when shouting in a restaurant at their phones (apparently they need to do this to be heard).

 

I'm sure this is OK in their country and just a cultural thing but I don't want to be around it.

 

 

They dont spend much, 1 coke and 3 richer people and share it from what ive seen...The Other 17 in the tour pass round a bottle of water.

Yes I have commented on this word in past stories, sounds sleazy.

The reason for this Chinese ‘disinterest’ is clear.

 

It’s obviously caused by the severe lack of spittoons. They can’t feel quite ‘content’ without a good healthy spit every five minutes or so. And spitting on the floor or a wall isn't nearly as satisfying as hitting an old fashioned spittoon from a distance of two or three meters.

 

TAT officials should therefore ensure that there are adequate spittoons in every plane, bus, taxi, boat, hotel, lift, restaurant, shop, bank, government office, hospital, temple, beach…and so on.

 

Show the Chinese that Thailand really cares…and they’ll soon be back in swarms.

When a group of chinese enters a hotel you won't get any chance to use the elevator, it belongs to the group.

 

They also pushed me away several times but i just push them back and tell them to not be so rude. They don't get it though but one day the quarter will drop i hope.

 

One day at Swampi i decided to stop jumping aside for running chinese, within 30 seconds a chinese lady hit her eye hard on my shoulder and that hurt her....solly...i hope you learned not to run in a busy place like an airport.

 

At the immigration in Singapore the group which sat around me in the plane run to the disabled people line which was the shortest one...the officer yelled loud to them to go to the other lines since they were not handicapped. So they came standing behind me and had big fun about the yelling against them.

Just bring back 0 dollar tours if that fails make it give you 20 baht tour and roads can be grid locked once again with busses, 7-11 full and mama reporting high profits ????

At Swampy I elbowed a Chinese woman who was trying to push in line in customs, a good, sharp jab in the ribs let her know she should queue like everyone else.

Then at Swampy two Chinese women tried to push in, at the train,  they did not succeed.

 

I have found it is mostly Chinese women,  Chinese men do not seem so bad.

Get a mobile phone jammer. They are wonderful and you can have a lot of fun. It shuts them up in a restaurant or anywhere else you want quiet.

It is research watching one lot in Cha Am and a gaggle in Pataya dont need no kid to show me his bit o paper from TOT we can all see their tight n rude

Indeed , 7-11 and family marts never sold that many mama noodles ????

I gotta agree with most here, and I also try to understand the lack of education, but when people tell you not to do something or can see you are upsetting people why cant they "get it"?  I just watch them in amazement as they scramble about--walking into traffic and just odd behavior, it astounds me..truly.

 

I wont allow cue jumpers as I nabbed one today at immigration for a visa in laos...and watched a chinese woman trip on the chairs 3x...why cant she see where shes going???..once..ok..oops thats 2.....again..3!?

 

I just cant wrap my brain around the me first-everyone else is crazy idea, and the LOOK you get from them

when u call their behavior out..like I"M the crazy one..I'd like to visit china but I'd think i'd def go insane there.

 

I remember seeing a chinese girl throw up at an airport on the FLOOR when the bathroom was RIGHT behind her, and she had time to make it, as I was watching here...also a girl drop pants and pee in street in CM!!..???

Anyone that can enlighten me is welcome, as I am truly curious about them...help me understand this...

Read the Topic, its about Thailand. As for the Chins here it tends to be a Class thing. A Benidorm/ Pataya type Holiday Maker isnt well suited to Saint Moritz generally.Those who have money and well travelled fit politely in un noticed , just like Old Brits do.
