george
German arrested for child abuse in Thailand BANGKOK: -- Thai police arrested a German national over the weekend on charges of raping and abducting a minor, media reports said yesterday. Police arrested the man, identified as 64-year-old Helmut Nils of Frankfurt, on Saturday shortly after the Udon Thani Court issued an arrest warrant for him on rape charges. Police Colonel Manit Keowwong of Kudjap district, Udon Thani, 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, said Nils was arrested in a rented house with a 12 year-old Thai girl, said Thai Rath newspaper. Police also found pornographic videos and a digital movie camera containing a clip of the girl doing a strip tease. If found guilty of raping a minor, Nils faces a minimum jail sentenced of ten years in prison. Nils, a former computer technician, had been visiting Thailand on a regular basis for the past 15 years and was fluent in the language, police said. -- DPA 2007-02-

sriracha john
This is really bad stuff... ---------------------------------------------------- Helmut Nils has been charged with the rape of a girl under 13 years of age. Police were alerted by an anonymous tip reporting screams and that Helmut was abusing a young girl in his home. When police raided the house in Udon Thani, they found that a 12 year old girl in the 5th grade had been living there with the 64 year old Helmut Nils. A search of the house turned up many pornographic materials, including self-made videos involving the girl and himself. During the police investigation it was learned that the girl had been entrusted by her mother to a neighbor's care early last year. Initially, the mother was sending monetary support to the woman but that stopped shortly. The woman who was entrusted with the girl's care was approached by Helmut last year and he offered to provide support to the woman in exchange for the girl performing housekeeping chores in his house on the weekends, which then progressed to a live-in status 5 months ago. When questioned, the girl reported soon after she began staying at Helmut's house, he showed her pornographic videos and then he propositioned her. When she refused, he raped her and gave her 300 baht. Over the course of the last 5 months, he repeatedly raped her countless times. She stayed out of fear and didn't inform anyone because of his threats to her not to do so. She felt she had no one to turn to and no where else to go. Upon questioning by police, Helmut revealed that he has been coming to Thailand for over 15 years and that he has been married and divorced on 4 different occasions to 15 year old girls. He explained that 15 is the minimum legal age to marry in Thailand, although he actually preferred girls that were between the ages of 11 and 15. - translation of Thai Rath newspaper article http://www.thairath.co.th/chksearch.php?ne...--content=36648 Edited February 14, 2007 by sriracha john

Poor little girl and sick b_stard. If this story would have been about 12, 13 and 15 year old girls in the West, ALL the media would have jumped at it. Don't know if the German media did already. What's so shocking is the -apparent- behaviour of the parents....what parents would send (or allow) their girls to an old man like this.....animal ? Disgusting. sriracha john
Just to clarify, the girl's mother entrusted the care of her daughter to a friend of hers and not to Helmut directly. It was only after the mother's support payments to her friend stopped that this "friend", who is apparently poor herself, allowed Helmut to convince her that he could help out with her support. Evidently, he was quite persuasive and convincing in his "jai dee" con job. He's been manipulating and conning people in Thailand for years and it would seem he's very good at it. Not only in conning in the girl's mother's friend, but also in intimidating the girl herself to such a degree that she didn't seek help. Unfortunately a lot of paedophiles are good at gaining trust of people. That is their MO and how they get to carry on this sort of thing for so long. leisurely
Dirty sick scum bag. I do think though that the mother must look to herself. Didn't she wonder what would happen when the money stopped coming from her. It certainly doesn't justify what this knob cheese did but........................ george
Update: Paedophile suspect dead in suicide UDON THANI: -- A German national charged with raping a minor in Thailand was found dead in his prison cell in what was believed to be a suicide, police said Thursday. The body of Helmut Nehls, 64, was found Wednesday at a prison in the northeastern city of Udon Thani with his wrists slashed and a sock stuffed down his throat, police Captain Jirapong Singhasuriya said. He was believed to have died from suffocation, rather than loss of blood because the slashes to his wrists, inflicted with the jagged edge of a toilet bowl, were not deep, police said. "We are sure this was a suicide because no one could get in to his cell, and the key to his cell was with the supervisor, not the lower officers," Jirapong said. "Nehls had requested a solitary cell because he was suffering stress and was being bothered by the other prisoners," Jirapong added in a telephone interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. Thai police arrested Nehls, who is from Zeppernick in the eastern German state of Sachsen-Anhalt, on February 10 on charges of raping and abducting a minor. He was arrested in a rented house in Udon Thani, 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, with a 12-year-old girl. Police found pornographic videos and a digital movie camera containing a clip of the young girl doing a strip tease. If he had been found guilty of raping a minor, Nehls faced 10 to 20 years in prison. Nehls, a former computer technician, had been visiting Thailand on a regular basis for the past 15 years and was fluent in the language, police said. -- DPA 2007-02-

PhilHarries
Slashed wrists, sock stuffed down his throat? Suicide? The key was with the supervisor, not on a rack in the prison office. What happens in the case of an emergency and the supervisor is off gin khao or horng naam? No, more likely a few Baht bought instant justice I'd say. Many years ago I saw a cartoon in an, ahem, adult publication depictng a scene inside a butcher's shop. There was a police seargent and an inspector standing by the work bench. On the bench was an old fashioned hand operated mincing machine with a pile of mincemeat on the floor beneath. From the feed chute of the machine came a man's arm bent around with the hand on the handle. The seargent was saying "Most determined case of suicide I've ever seen inspector". The regrets at not cutting out and keeping this gem only intensify every time I read reports like this. Probably not humane or PC to say it but. GOOD RIDDANCE SCUMBAG! You got off too lightly. I'd say justice was served quick and vicious..Thai style. I won't shed any tears over this one and hat's off to the Thais who took initiative in this instead of making it an international media circus. sriracha john
German child-sex suspect in Thai jail commits suicide A 64-year-old German man arrested on child sex charges this week committed suicide in the Thai jail where he was in solitary confinement, police said Thursday. Helmut Nehls, from the German town of Zeppernick, was found dead early Wednesday in his cell in the northeastern Thai town of Udon Thani, police said. Nehls was arrested Saturday and charged with having sex with girls under the age of 13, a crime punishable by life in prison, police said. He had lived in Thailand for 15 years and had been paying very poor parents or abandoned children up to 4,000 baht (about 110 dollars) for young girls to spend weekends with him, police said. Neighbours had complained about his suspicious behaviour and when police searched his home, they said they found pornograhic materials. Nehls had stuffed his socks in his mouth, smashed his eyeglasses and used the shards to cut his wrists, police Captain Jirapong Singhasuriya said. "The cause of death was not from cutting his veins with the glass, but could have been suffocation because he had stuffed his socks down his throat," Jirapong said. - Agence France-Presse Edited February 15, 2007 by sriracha john

atlastaname
It would be easy to jump on the bandwagon and say scumbag..he deserved it etc etc. However if it turns out that he did not commit suicide then he was murdered. It is not summary justice it is murder. And that is what you are all cheering. We are supposed to live in a civilised society , but no society is civilised if the rule of law is not respected. 10 years would have been an appropriate punishment , murder is not.
