BANGKOK, 24th October 2018 (NNT) – Following international coverage of waste buildup on Koh Samui, the government has promised prioritization of garbage management nationwide and has scheduled a meeting on the issue next week.

Minister of the Interior Gen Anupong Paojinda has responded to foreign news outlets reporting over 300,000 tons of waste has accumulated on the resort island of Koh Samui by saying the government is devoting much time to the issue of garbage at tourism destinations and intends to hold a follow-up meeting with local administrations soon.

The minister explained that garbage on Koh Samui is being removed at a rate of 150 tons a day and that the Ministry of the Interior has called a meeting in Surat Thani next week to discuss further measures.

Interior minister to get a whiff of Samui stink

By The Nation

Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda is off to Koh Samui to see what the stink is all about.

He announced the trip on Wednesday after a Japanese news agency reported a stench wafting over the island, which is an international tourist magnet, from 300,000 tonnes of garbage piling up there.

Anupong said the garbage had been accumulating since a new disposal plant went into operation, but he’d be there next week to discuss urgent measures with the governor of Surat Thani province.

I hope the Thais in the country side, will understand that the Government will take care of their garbage problems later, but now just the tourist areas.

Must be waste generated by foreigners? Have farang not been blamed yet?

Why has the pile been allowed to accumulate so much? Who is not doing their job?

Why not introduce a dispose of your waste visa and make it even more difficult to live a life in so called (waste tip) paradise in (Thailand) the land of the free.

No doubt nothing positive will be done.

Usual hot air...

How about use the new disposal plant?

Don't worry. It's only going to take five brainstorming meetings, two dozen work luncheons and the appointment of three committees to eventually find out that this actually might be a viable option.

I see the math for 2000 days to clean up. What math produced 300000 tons? I'm sure it didn't take 2000 days to build up that pile of garbage.

We must have a meeting to draw up draft proposals for a working plan, in order to draught an agenda to form a committee to deal with the problem.

Once  we  have done a  far off foreign devil  fact finding mission.

The amount of plastic and garbage being burned daily at the Lipa side of the island was enough to give us a headache and sore throat. Doesnt look like it that the autorities are taking the waste problem serious enough.

About 30 years late & what about the 2 French perfectly good incinerators there been sitting idle for at least 12 years ??? It is called incompetence & laziness
Don't be too harsh, it's called lack of maintenance awareness.

Followed by catastrophic consequences.

Hey! You forgot about the trip by 50 committee members to another country for fact finding.

But this guy needs his Shovel to remove all the Toxic Pigeon Crap.

Looks like he needs to prioritise his schedules and workload.
