Just wondering what I should do. I am living in Thailand on a OA Family one year extension on an Australian passport which will expire next October 2019. I will have to renew in the next 12 months at some point. Don't really have any plans to go any other countries in the next year but you never know. My extension will expire about the same time as my Australian passport.

I know some countries you need to have at least 6 months to a year left on your passport to enter. Does that apply to Thailand too?

What should I do?

If you do not have 12 months of passport validity remaining when you apply for your extension it will only be issued to the date your passport expires.

It appears you will need to get new passport before you apply for your next extension.

It is best to renew your passport prior to only having 6 months remaining on it.

Since you are from Australia you only need a passport valid for your length of stay to enter Thailand. But some airlines have their own rules that requires 6 months remaining to board a flight.

Thanks Joe. I believe I can only do my passport renewal in Bangkok. Do you know much about the process for Australia...ie apply from here (Khon Kaen) and pick up later in Bkk etc or is it a do it all in a day thing at the embassy?

Did mine recently, you have to make an appointment with the embassy, they only open from 8.30 to 12. Download and fill in the application, attach the exact photo's they ask for on their site. Arrive before your appointment time, take a ticket and wait. Submit, pay their exorbitant fee, if you want to come back and pick up the new one make another appointment. If you want them to send it ems, they will cut a piece out of your old one so you can not use it, the new one will come in about two weeks.

Kenny ask the Aussie consulate when applying for your new passport to give you a letter saying that they have issued it to you. I thought that it was a thing of the past but when I went to have my extension of stay transferred to my new passport by immigration in Jomtien they wanted to see the proof that they had indeed issued it. within th

This had happened before but I thought they had got rid of this practice. They may well have & I got the run around. As I had to get to Vietnam for work I sourced someone that would get the visa transferred the next day ( for a fee ).

Maybe Mr T can shed some light on if he had to have the letter or not. I didn't have time to argue.

Good point. Never thought of that. So you get a new passport you of course need them to renter visa and extension details. Do the Aus embassy take your old passport so you dont have any proof? Is that what you mean?

No mate you get the old passport back.  What i meant was Jomtien Immigration where asking for a letter from Oz consulate saying that they had issued the new passport to me. I thought this documentation was not needed anymore but they wanted it.

As for the appointment you can do it online thru the Australian Consulate, sorry don't have a link

Made the appointment over the phone, they do not take your old passport. Go to your local immi, pay 500 baht and transfer everything over. Takes up the first two pages of the new passport and about an hour of your time.

Renewal of OZ passport is quite easy:

- You start the application on-line and then print it out which gives you a reference number. (It's on the Australian Embassy Bangkok website and quite easy to complete).

- You now visit the embassy on Wireless Road Bkk (check the website for opening / closing hours for consular matters), take the partly completed on-line application with reference number.  Give them a certified copy of your birth certificate (easy to obtain from the registrar of births, deaths and marriages in your city / town of birth, can be done easily my mail) and you need to take several copies of a proper passport photo that will be accepted, the size, the background color etc., check the website for the type of photo, JPEG or whatever it is) .

- Re-check on the website if any of the above has changed, especially the birth certificate requirement. If your unsure don't hesitate to call the OZ embassy consular section, they don't bite, they are good listeners, polite and friendly and always give clear answers.

Service at consular is professional, friendly, clear and quick, they will usually ask you to go another counter (1 minute walk) for a quick interview. The officer will check the documents quickly and then endorse the photos. The officer will ask you to indicate whether you want to pick up the new passport at the embassy on Wireless road or have it mailed direct to your home by EMS. They will now send you back to the main consular area (1 minute walk) and ask you to pay the fee.

- The consular people will then send all the documents to Canberra for making the new passport. Nowadays OZ passport are only made in Canberra.

- I've done all of the above 2 times, never any problem or delay, all easy and friendly.

- A point to consider, all the previous times I've done it they cut half of the front and back cover off my current passport meaning that it's unusable. So you need to plan when to start the process.

- They seem to always say about 10 to 14 days to receive your new passport, but every time I've received my new passport at home within 3 to 5 working days.

Good luck.

After the embassy has cut half of the front back covers off yes it can't be used to exit / enter another country.

Whether it would be accepted 'after cutting' by local police etc., I don't know but I understand that you can ask for a letter from the embassy which indicates that a new passport is in process. A couple of times I've shown my pink Thai ID card, that seems to surfice.

90 day reporting - sorry I can't answer that question, I have PR, no 90 day reporting.
