Does the government have anything to do with setting the price of rice in Thailand or is this purely a supply and demand issue. If the former then where would I find the prices quoted?

The export association rice prices are quoted in baht per tonne. Does that help? If you have a rice merchant in your area they usually have a board out front that shows what they are buying paddy rice (unmilled) at. Then depends on moisture content and the experienced eye of the buyer. As a rule of thumb the milling process reduces the paddy weight by about 30%. 

There's an article in today's Bangkok Post about Thai rice sales and in the article they refer to the benchmark 5% broken rice.

On the website Jip 99 linked it can be found listed as "Thailand 5% broken" with a current price of 403$/MT which gives a kg price just under 13 Baht/kg. This is more in line with what I've heard one has to pay farmers for the rice.

Purchase price is set by the government every year.

Earlier this year they set the price at 10bht/kg, which according to the farmers around me is the lowest price in their memory.

(I believe that was the price set for sticky rice)

For those interested in our area harvest has started and paddy Hom Mali 105 is going for 13-14 baht per kg at the local merchants.

About the same in our area central Lopburi, wife's daughter, and son in law sold some Hom Mali, not certain strain, they got 1400 baht/ton, they combined and sold the crop on the same day, not certain on the moisture. 

Waiting to see what our yield is like, still a week or so to go. According to the wife the grain fill is not so good as we had a bad rainfall this year and were lucky that we got released water in the canal, many near us on higher ground got nothing but paddies full of weed. Still I will be more than happy with 13 baht after last year's meagre 8-9. Fingers crossed.

You do understand different types of rice have different selling prices.

Sticky rice is usually the cheapest.

Yes indeed. I used to import rice to the UK.

Don't take it to heart, i used to ship crafts and furniture out of Bali...my beef is the Thai elites that set tariffs ... most rice depo's usually have the owners "mansion" homes on site and you see the state of the vehicles and the homes of the farmers delivering the goods ... if you get my drift ?  TD.

That was before the advent of the Watch Collector and his crusade against corruption, of which the rice subsidies was a major part.

 

Almost overnight, the average price of rice fell from 18-20 to 8-10 baht per kilo, and remained there...until...today where it has shot back up to around 14 baht.

 

The fact that there is an election coming in a few months has nothing to do with it, no more than the 1,500 baht per rai given to the rice farmers owning small farms.

 

This is all and only the free market at work...

That was a promo from Pryut to gain favour from the reds

 Thaksin decided to stockpile rice in an obviously hope- and brain-less attempt to get rice prices to rise, as a result neighbouring countries started cultivating more rice, one reason why it didn't work and why we have to compete with Vietnam and the like.

Oh yes.

 

The big houses look, to us, like the 'have's' are rubbing the noses of the 'have not's' in the dirt.

 

In Thailand the 'have not's' will wai even higher to the 'have's' out of "respect".......................... nothing Socialist about the system here..
