"Commander Joke" flies to Sadao to help the neighbors

The chief of immigration Maj-Gen Surachate Hakparn held a news conference yesterday to report the smashing of a Malaysian call center gang operating near the border in Sadao.

This time he was working alongside the Cybercrime Department of Malaysia in arresting 15 Malaysian nationals - 10 men and 5 women - you were running a new style of "merit making" call center fraud.

Posing as police gang members would phone people in Malaysia to say they were implicated in crime related to a religious institution.

They were persuaded to part with 50 ringgit each for which they would then get four numbers for the Malaysian lottery and a magic cloth to atone for their "crime".

Maj-Gen Surachate said that if anyone won a prize in the lottery they had to give the gang 30% and many did that. People who didn't win had to buy more numbers.

Speaking at Sadao immigration HQ he added that the ringleader was a man called "Arkhun": "He was coming into Thailand every week to get the proceeds of this crime. We have all concerned in custody."

The gang were making 2 million baht a month.

The gang have had their visas revoked and will be handed over to the Malaysian authorities for prosecution.

Thai Rath respectfully referred to the Maj-Gen as "Commander Joke" after calling him Big Joke in their headline.

I see he's stopped 'acting' this week. Is his position now permanent?

A couple of weeks ago he stopped acting, then he started again - on a daily basis.

Wonder if he has his equity card?

No acting here, he's DPM Prawatch's right hand man!
