Bangkok wants canal colorized, homeowners balk

BANGKOK — Another day and another City Hall project, this one to beautify the capital, is met with controversy.

 

Residents along the banks of Khlong Ong Ang complain they were forced to repaint their homes and pay 35,000 baht for a metropolitan administration campaign to make the area more colorful for the Loy Krathong festival. The local district chief on Monday said no such demands were made but that the authorities would like homeowners to “cooperate” with the effort.

Yep, the colour of dirty concrete. Probably the ugliest buildings/towns in the world. Who was it who said 'The measure of a culture's health is in the beauty, of it's architecture'? John Ruskin, I think.

City Hall said it would build pedestrian paths along the canal, plant more trees, improve the sewage system, repair bridges and install more security cameras.

Why now, they haven't bothered for the last quarter century.

They should not need to pay anything. This country is wealthy tourist destination and the public are duped.

This is the sort of campaign where residents cough up 35,000 baht for some raggedy ass painter to repaint their houses who is then paid about 10,000 baht for his efforts while the other 25,000 goes under the table to those in high office. Sounds normal routine.
