PHUKET:-- The Phuket Marine Office has issued a notice for all marine transport operators to observe safety protocols for the upcoming Loy Krathong festivities next Thursday (Nov 22), including reminding boat captains not to be drunk at the helm.

Boat passengers are banned from drinking alcohol, too, the notice, issued today (Nov 16), warned.

The notice was addressed to all pier operators, boat captains and even to passengers in Phuket looking to board a water vessel during the festival.

"Boat passengers are banned from drinking alcohol, too, the notice, issued today (Nov 16), warned"

Best of luck enforcing that  ... ????

Not a problem, captains. You can all get pissed the next day with a boat full of tourists.

Honestly, why do the marine department come up with such statements?

OK, I know it's likely that this is just clumsy reporting ... but passengers are "banned" from drinking alcohol, yet Captains are only "reminded not to be drunk".

Surely Captains (and all crew) should be banned from drinking alcohol, and passengers should refrain from getting drunk.

Didn't the brand new rules issued in Pattaya yesterday state that boat passengers could drink?

I think it is more aimed at individuals then at organised tours.

True and again why no emphasis on safety every day, rather then selected days?

Passengers are entitled to expect the boat own and acaptain have total safety in mind every day!

Improve safety one day a week - must be hereditary. It comes from the same committee that got supermarkets not to issue plastic bags one day a week.

This is exactly why tourists are not interested-urging and suggestion does not work when there is money and no enforcement involved

How about inspections crew training and licensing random drug testing mandatory drills 365days a year to try to get the carnage under control?

Good idea. Unfortunately that comes under the heading of an administration that gives a shit. This one doesn't.
