‘No more Khmer Rouge leaders left to stand trial’

Friday's verdict in the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan has been hailed as “historic” for “Cambodia and all humanity”, while Minister of Interior Sar Kheng said no further cases of its kind would be brought to court.

 

“There are no more [top Khmer Rouge leaders left to try], and our policy [is that] now this process has ended,” Sar Kheng said.

 

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), also known as the Khmer Rouge tribunal, found Nuon Chea, 92, who was second in command to Pol Pot and known as “Brother Number Two”, guilty of genocide against ethnic Vietnamese, the Cham Muslim minority group and former officials in the previous Khmer Republic government.

A travesty of justice and a huge waste of money. They milked it as long as possible and those involved made off like bandits.

It's a common ploy used by others in neighbouring countries.

So what about their current "leader in charge"? Wasn't he too a high-up Khmer Rouge?!?

Hun Sen came to power with the Khmer Rouge and served as a Battalion Commander in the Eastern Region of Democratic Kampuchea (the state name during the Khmer Rouge government). In 1977, during internal purges of the Khmer Rouge regime, Hun Sen and his battalion cadres fled to Vietnam.

Hun Sen became one of the leaders of the rebel army and government that the Vietnamese government sponsored when they prepared to invade Cambodia. When the Khmer Rouge was defeated, Hun Sen was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Vietnamese-installed People's Republic of Kampuchea/State of Cambodia (PRK/SOC) in 1979."

Exactly. And of those that have stood trial - none have received a just punishmet for their crimes against the Cambodian, Vietnamese and other victims whom they murdered and butchered indiscriminately.
