Democrats to probe Ivanka Trump's private email use for government work

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top House Democrat on Tuesday said a Congressional committee will investigate Ivanka Trump, U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter and a key White House adviser, following reports that she repeatedly used a personal email account for government business.

A White House review of Ivanka Trump's email found that she used her personal account up to 100 times last year to contact other Trump administration officials, the Washington Post reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the review.

Use of a personal account for government business potentially violates a law requiring preservation of all presidential records.

President Trump, a Republican, repeatedly blasted his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election campaign over her use of personal email and a private server while she was U.S. secretary of state.

Representatives for U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said the panel will investigate White House communications when Democrats take over the U.S. House of Representatives in January.

"We plan to continue our investigation of the presidential records act and federal records act, and we want to know if Ivanka complied with the law," his office said in a statement.

Cummings, in a separate statement, said the White House has not handed over requested documents.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment, but Trump said his daughter's use of her personal email account was different from Clinton's.

"For a little period of time, Ivanka did some emails. They weren't classified like Hillary Clinton. They weren't deleted like Hillary Clinton ... She wasn't doing anything to hide her emails," Trump told reporters.

"There was no servers in the basement like Hillary Clinton had," he added later.

Peter Mirijanian, a spokesman for Ivanka Trump's ethics lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told the Post the emails occurred before Ivanka Trump was aware of government record-keeping regulations.

Since then, she has turned over all her government-related emails to be stored with other White House records, the Post reported.

Ivanka Trump's emails came to light when White House officials began reviewing them in response to a lawsuit from watchdog group American Oversight, according to the Post. The paper said she used the personal account for official business fewer than 100 times in 2017.

The New York Times also reported on Ivanka Trump's email use.

Clinton's email practices as secretary of state prompted a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe in the run-up to the 2016 election that still draws ire from Trump and calls from some of his supporters to "lock her up."

The FBI concluded Clinton's actions were extremely careless but did not recommend any charges be filed. Clinton expressed regret for her decision to use a private server but said she violated no rules.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat on the Senate Judiciary panel, said there was "no way" Ivanka Trump did not know the rules after the 2016 campaign. There were also larger questions about the Trump family's mixing of private enterprise and government duties, Blumenthal said.

"It raises the issue of whether there has been anything improper. There should be some kind of investigation" either by Congress or the White House ethics office, Blumenthal told CNN.

The White House began reviewing senior aides' email use last year after reports that Ivanka Trump's husband Jared Kushner, also a top White House adviser, used private email for government work.

So she didn't listen to any of her daddy's rallies. Wise woman.

So, she openly communicated things that were confidential?  Even things like when and where someone is going be could be classified.

DT is at his most absurd when making these all-conclusive statements, like "the tests came back from the doctor, I tested positive for everything."

I find it hard to believe that there is an 'ethics lawyer' anywhere in the sordid business affairs that are presently coming out of the White House. He must be not only the busiest guy but also the most ignored.

Lock her up !   :whistling:

Interesting. For years now we heard from democrats that an acting secretary of state purposefully deleting and hiding 30,000 confidential emails sent from personal email accounts, which led to severe security breaches is no big deal. Yet now they ask us to hound this young lady for a much more minor version of the same offense. Some people have no concept of hypocrisy, or are so blinded by personal hatred of the family Trump that they can overlook any and all logic merely to be able to harass Ms Trump.

My personal views on this is that Ms Trump should be punished according to her security breech, and also should crooked Hillary for her much worse offense, and if lives were lost due to Clinton's appalling behavior then apt charges be brought also. Sweeping her email crimes under the rug did not set a good precedent IMO.

I think the same.  Ethics committee?  But there are no ethics!

A good ball pein hammer will take care of any problem. Hey, it worked fir hrc.

Ivanka, Jared, Stephen Miller, Gary Cohen, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus all used private email for government business.

Who knew it was a bad idea?

As with Hillary, these people are all above the law. Noise will be made, talking heads will go back and forth with feigned indignation, and two weeks from now there will be some new atrocity someone is doing somewhere, leaving this story in the dust. And so it goes, on and on and . . .

This story is over a year old.

Why is it hitting the headlines today I wonder.

Enjoy Thanksgiving and get some rest while you can, the filthy truth is about to hit the fan.

Demo's didn't care about Hillary's emails. Now emails are important, not even email by a government official.

Trumps problem is that thing between his nose and his chin, and the lack of any gray matter between his ears.

Virtually everything he says or tweets is coming back to bite him.

the fbi investigated and found no grounds to pursue charges against HRC... “if lives were lost...” wow... stick that out there to hang like a soiled jock strap, nice one mr trumpish, but again, the fbi found no grounds to prosecute HRC...

Now... as you want ms trump held accountable to the level of her misdeeds ( the same “crime” as HRC, when written on a piece of paper), then I can only assume you agree with a full investigation, to establish her level of wrong doing, as logically, this is the only way of discovering wether or not she (IV) has indulged is gross misconduct or appalling behavior.

moving higher... hypocracy?... wow... you can’t see the hypocracy of trump defending his daughter against the same charges that he wanted HRC locked up for?... some people are indeed blinded by their feelings about trump.

Lock her up, lock her up, lock her up.

Crooked Ivanka - lock her up!

If they need any assistance probing Ivanka, I would like to offer my assistance. I promise to warm my hands first and will even forgo my Marigold gloves for a modest additional fee.

Trump would not let the "lock her up" mantra rest during his campaign. Would he have the courage and objectivity to apply that same rhetoric to Ivanka?

Of course not. Why? He lacks courage, he is ruled by emotion, and there is no policy, nor any principal.

Only rhetoric and hyperbole.

I thought trumps maga crowds were wrong and ignorant when they called for Hillary Clinton to be locked up the same thing, so I won’t be a hypocrite and call for ms trump to be locked up.

I assume the trump maga crowds likewise will not take a hypocritical stance on ms trump’s behaviour.

Red meat for the rabble!  Every problem in the US is because of HRC and Obama, ask anyone with a stupid red hat (made in China (pronounced CHIGH-na)) if you don't believe me.

It's still one of the highlights of his fan club events, along with "build the wall!"

One of the worst things that could happen to DT is if Hillary died.

Firstly the person doing the ‘hounding’ right now it is Trey Gowdy (Republican- SC) head of the House Oversight Committee, Gowdy is demanding details of Ivanka’s use of her private email for government business be released to his committee and the House.

Clinton’s use of her private email for government business was investigated (by Gowdy’s committee), nobody has produced any evidence of deaths arising from her use of her private email. Your claim deaths occurred is void of any evidence or facts to back it up.

Be still my heart...Trey Gowdy wrote a letter.

Gowdy wants information on Ivanka Trump's use of personal email, sets December deadline

Outgoing House Oversight Committee chair Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., sent a letter to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly demanding information on Ivanka Trump’s reported use of personal email.

The letter, obtained by Fox News, follows the Washington Post report claiming that Trump sent hundreds of emails about White House business to contact “White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistant," an apparent violation of the Presidential Record Act. The report does not indicate if the emails contained any classified or sensitive government information.

A member of the GOP with some integrity? Sounds like such a refreshing concept. It does seem like some of the republicans have been emboldened by the sweeping takeover of the house by the democrats. Perhaps they will not feel the need to be in such lock step with their master?
