American missionary killed by tribe on remote Indian island

Let the natives live in peace.

I read of these self contained, indigenous tribes around the world, many in Brazil which are supposedly about to get wiped out as a result of the new right wing President-elect Jair Bolsonarno.

I'm sure many of these tribes could teach us a thing or two about living in peace and harmony.

Perhaps some of the tribe have visited "the outside world" and returned to tell of the horrors of modernized society.

As for the "American missionary", he knew that his trip was likely to not end well.

Yes, it is wonderful to see everyone in agreement. These Sentinel Islanders are able to celebrate their culture and live as per their historic traditions and beliefs. How fantastic to see this civilization protected. And it is a terrible reminder of how the western world is nowadays totally unable to protect their civilization and cultures. We are told we need diversity and to quash our own cultures to be respectful to other cultures that came to benefit from what we had created. I believe the Sentinelese have the right idea, removing any invasive being that arrives on their fair shores. Clearly they have not had PC dogma drummed into their brains.

I wonder if this missionary was shouting Biblical quotes as they were spearing him, or if in his last minutes reality kicked in and he realized he was truly alone with no invisible omnipresent being to watch over him. We will never know.

I don't blame the natives either...

  • Well we are always hearing...Jesus saves, well he didnt this time. Why do some smart <deleted> people think they have the right to try and instil their beliefs on others?

  • The tribe should send missionaries to America to show them the way back to the moral high ground.

This is an interesting video about the Sentinelese...if anyone wants to see what they look like.  The missionary dude should have just brought them some coconuts!

Who was the African leader who said they gave us bibles and said close your eyes and pray, when we opened our eyes we had bibles and they had our country.

Jomo Kenyatta.

The missionaries also infused a violent anti-homosexual 'gospel' into many African countries which still has'nt been quelled.

well done Sentinelese people. of course RIP for the guy.

probably one of the last castles of a protected old and and gold tribal life.

and this guy is going there to spread a nonsense fairy tale called Christianity.

clearly those tribes there dont want to contact with modern world.

and I can clearly see why as all those such tribes in Africa for example were enslaved and people are used as slaves by so called 'modern people of west' for centuries and their land is taken.

Sentinelese people are wise. hope they do the same for the next missionary, be it christian, jew or muslim. or any modern person stepping to that island.

leave them a alone!

Yes.

Or at least show some respect for their own beliefs.

But wait-ever since 1492 the West has shown a signal incapacity to have any respect for any other cultures beliefs...

First Contact. Always fascinating.

There's a marvellous short film from Papua in about 1932 as the first Aussie administrators arrive in a particular valley for the first time and the locals approach slowly to greet them. Very moving.

You have to admire his ........... chutzpah !
Please no. Jews don't proselytize.

Yes and such people do risk their lives. I see a big difference between explorers/anthropologists and missionaries.

Yes.

The Leahy brothers.

Amazing film.

The Papuans (Australian nomenclature) broke down and cried because it was totally beyond their ken.

Teach us how to live in peace? How dumb are you? They've literally murdered several people in cold blood who posed no threat to them. What could they teach us? How to be murderous savages? Lol

'murderous savages..'

Well the 20th century would surely indicate where the murderous savages come from-in abundance.

Ah yes, the Phil Sheridan textbook used in Anthropology 101.

Ahh the old white people bad so that absolves everyone else from culpability school of thought.

At least we don't murder everyone by default unlike these aggressive savages. "teach us peace" ????

I think the guy must have known he was on a "suicide mission" .

Maybe he wanted to die as a martyr in the name of Jesus.

He succeeded but nobody cares and life will go on.

We had a guy in Alaska used to talk to Grizzly Bears until they ate him and his girlfriend.

Wonder how the missionary tasted. Hey welcome to out Island dude, we would love to have you for dinner.

A previous poster mentioned this excellent documentary-well worth watching.

It is sad that he died.   He sounds like an interesting person, although I don't agree with the message he is trying to convey.

The island's are restricted and he broke the law.   The restriction on travel is a there for very good reasons.   It is there to prevent incidents like this and to prevent the spread of disease to this group of people.

Like a lot of people, he died because he didn't follow the rules and in this case those are reasonable rules.

Maybe he quoted Jesus: "take and eat, this is my body."

And so a new phrase enters the lexicon -- the Sentinelese Solution. When someone is about to enter your world and bring with them a problem likely to wipe you out -- such as a tax collector -- feel free to employ the Sentinelese Solution (if the Neymar Effect fails).

Inconsistency is massive.

Slightly off-topic, but in Myanmar where I worked for a few years until last month, it is illegal to

proselytize (convert or attempt to convert someone from one religion, belief, or opinion to another).

As a foreigner, a condition of the issue of my business visa was that I would not get involved in local politics and I would not proselytize.  I had to sign a letter undertaking not to do these things.

You can visit the country to preach etc, but only to those who are already of your religion.

I totally support a law like this, yet if you visit the GoFundMe website and search for funding requests for 'Burma', you'll find many from 'crazy' American Christian groups who are going to visit Myanmar to preach to Buddhists (and maybe the occasional Muslim).

Years ago when I first started working in Myanmar, I met a number of western teachers who were proselytizing under the guise of their employment. "Let's all learn English by singing this song about Jesus".

I respect people of all religions, but detest anyone who tries to convert someone to a different religion, especially when the person is still a child.

The Myanmar people could learn a thing or two from the Sentinalese as to how these preachers should be dealt with ????

So, most people here are laughing at the Christian missionary who wanted to preach the name of the Lord Jesus to these people.

Okay, what about Evangelical Christians who go to China, to preach the name of the Lord Jesus there ? And Beijing, supposedly, does not allow total religious freedom in China.  And people want to criticise Beijing for not allowing total religious freedom in China. Inconsistency is massive.

The difference is that the Chinese are more than able to look after themselves and are in no danger of being wiped out within a few days by a 'Western' moron arriving laden with diseases for them to catch.

Even if I think that religion is the worst invention of human being, every body is free to practise one's religion

what I don't accept is people who proselytize , and try to teach and force other people to practise a religion which has nothing to do with their culture

people in this remote  island don't care of Lord Jesus (as you call him ) and they are right

Good Lord!

I certainly hope he had sufficient life insurance....

This guy was looking to die. He got his wish.

Ashes to ashes and sand to sand in his case.

Glad the Island natives buried him in the sand, no use

in using valuable soil to enturne him. RIP foolish guy.

Geezer

Ahm...you are aware, that the island was off limit to EVERYBODY and that may be for a good reason?

So how was the behavior of the "adventurer" less savage, than the behavior of the indigenous tribe?

Goig, where you are not allowed to, contacting people, you must not contact, bring your #@$%^! believe-system, some germs and bacteria (risking the killing off, of the whole population)...

Yeah...in this case absolutely: white people bad!

This is quite funny actually.  The guy is faced with a load of Neolithic hunters and he starts preaching 'Jesus loves you' songs at them in the vague hope that he'll convert them in an instant.  Not once but at least two to three times and he keeps going back for more.  I suspect he's bonkers which ultimately cost him his life.

I'm quietly glad that they got rid of him.  They need space to practice their independence and quite sure they were quite confused with his language skills.  Bonkers.
