Report Thai Scam Uncovered: Woman Charged in Call Centre Fraud Scheme
Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a significant development, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) yesterday detained a woman accused of luring Thai citizens into a fraudulent call centre operation in the Philippines. The suspect, Natwikon, was apprehended following a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on 25 April. She's charged with collaborating with accomplices to exploit individuals through forced labour, document confiscation, unlawful debt creation, and curtailing personal freedom. This arrest is part of Special Case No. 32/2023, which focuses on a scheme deceiving Thai citizens with fake job offers abroad. These offers, advertised on social media, promised lucrative roles in HR, marketing, and customer service, with salaries totalling around 50,000 baht (US$1,515) monthly. Upon expressing interest, applicants were interviewed by Chinese nationals and had their travels to the Philippines facilitated by the suspects. On arrival, the reality starkly contrasted with promises; passports were seized, and the victims were forced into a call centre scam. Their work involved using technology to deceive others, with severe consequences for failing to meet targets, including threats and debt manipulation. Victims likened their ordeal to human trafficking, facing threats of being sold to other companies if targets were not met. Fortunately, they secured aid from Philippine authorities and, upon returning home, formally accused the network. The DSI's swift action led to the suspect's arrest on 20 June outside an apartment in Bangkok's Phra Khanong area. Investigations continue as authorities aim to dismantle the entire network involved in this operation, with the suspect’s detention request submitted to the Criminal Court.
