Is chiro worth the risk, or is it just clever marketing? - If you look into the chiropractic industry, you’ll see that the background and business model are pretty eye-opening. It was founded back in 1895 by a magnetic healer who claimed he cured deafness by snapping a guy's spine. The original theory was that misaligned vertebrae block a mystical "life force" and cause virtually every disease known to man. Modern medical science, obviously, completely rejects that. While some modern "mixer" chiropractors stick to basic muscle and joint issues, the broader industry still has some massive red flags: Firstly there is limited proof: Beyond minor, short-term relief for lower back pain, there’s no real evidence it helps internal health issues—though plenty of practitioners still try to market it for that. Chiro patients always have to go back for further relief. There are also real risks: High-velocity neck adjustments carry a small but real risk of herniated discs or tearing the vertebral artery, or, which can lead to a stroke or worse. There is a clear business model too … lots of clinics are built around getting patients hooked on endless "maintenance packages" rather than actually fixing the problem long-term. This then asks the obvious question: “aren't you far better off just seeing a scientifically trained physical therapist?” A licensed PT operates entirely on evidence-based biomechanics and rehabilitation. Instead of relying on passive, lifelong adjustments, they focus on soft tissue, movement patterns, and targeted strengthening so you eventually stop needing treatment. I know plenty of expats out here use chiro clinics for back and neck issues after long flights or bad posture. But given the pseudoscientific roots and potential risks, why gamble on a chiropractor when standard physical therapy is available?
