Major Cineplex Group is preparing to launch its flagship Icon Cineconic in the Iconsiam mall on floors 6, 7, and 8.

Visarut Poolvaraluk, director of Major Cineplex, said designer Diego Gronda had created many of the world’s best cinemas such as the Kodak Theatre, which has hosted the Oscars, along with Paragon, Quartier and Mega cinemas.

Icon Cineconic has 13 screens, including one VIP, one iMax, one 4DX and one children's screen and one living-room screen with a total of 2,781 seats. All the other screens come with Laserplex for laser projection.

The Icon Cineconic is targeting 70 per cent Thai customers.

I have been to most shopping complexes in Bangkok and just visited Iconsiam shopping complex. It is like a tourist attraction on the 1st floor with a “Disney” decorative facade of water canals, old villages, & Chinatown. Great hygienic presentation of what Thailand once was ( without the dust,  noise, or smells). Amazing job the architects and interior designers did; however, to really do some shopping in this massive, spacious mall ( with escalators strategically placed so the shopper has to walk an extra ten minutes on each floor, takes forever. Nice to wander around but not for a regular shopper. I personally prefer the 4-5 shopping centers in Siam that have their own “personality” and are all connected with the skywalks. Big does not always mean better and I will be curious how many locals will use Siamicon as a regular place to shop And many of my younger Thai friends are doing their shopping on line which especially in Bangkok enables one to avoid the traffic jams or an all day outing just to purchase a pair of shoes or jogging shorts. Shopping complexes are closing up in USA because of Amazon and the convenience of on-line shopping. I wonder if within twenty years the same will be for Bangkok? (btw, many of the cinemas are not full either)
