The Election Commission has finally decided to set the limits of campaign spending for political parties and individual candidates in the upcoming election at 35 million baht and 1.5 million baht each respectively.

EC secretary-general Pol Col Charoongwit Poomma said today the campaign spending limits and other election-related issues were incorporated in the EC’s regulation approved by the EC board and is now being fine-tuned before it is to be published in the Royal Gazette for enforcement.

Although the Royal Decree on the election of members of the parliament is yet to be promulgated, he said election officials had been keeping a close watch on the activities of parties and individual candidates and had collected evidence of suspected wrongdoings which would be used to deal with the  wrongdoers after the election.

So, do the folk who attended a well publicised fund raising dinner get something of a refund because the party don't need the money?

I'm waiting for the real regulations to be published. Will these limits be per electorate? Per Provence? Across the country? Or per moo baahn?

Actually, I believe the Constitution allows the EC to suspend any candidate for suspected election wrongdoing before elections, not after the election.

Otherwise why now monitor party and candidate for suspected wrongdoings, then wait until after the election to enforce the law? Well, maybe other than having the power to pick and choose elected candidates perhaps politically unfavorable to the military for suspension of office.

It seems coincidentally convenient that a pro-military political party recently engaged in a questionable political dinner event with regards to campaign contributions, spending and use of celebrities before enforcement of the law is legal. Likely then that party gets a free pass for the event.
