I do understand your idea but creating more candidates is not necessarily the aim is it .
I think we already have more than enough candidates IMO.
If you allow posters to nominate themselves you are gonna get all the trolls and those who think only their posts carry any merit coming out of the woodwork and flooding the thread. Why bother ??
Allow the majority to vote and save yourself some time.

I have to disagree again.

Members are only going to vote for the posters they know, are credible to them and are who they consider, for whatever reasons, their favorite posters. I also doubt that thousands of members will suddenly nominate themselves, it`s mostly going to be those who are the most active participants on these forums and threads, like myself for example.

Regarding the logistics and software, I do agree it`s would take some organising and involve additional work for the organisers. But it would mean that all TV members who would like to be in the running for TV poster of the year have equal opportunities to do so.

It could be stipulated that members only with a certain minimum number of posts can be nominees, therefore excluding newbies that maybe trolls or just time wasters.

Only throwing out some ideas that might spice this up a bit, my suggestion box.

Okay we’re never gonna agree 100% but that’s okay, that’s what TVF is about.

I do agree with you that posters should have been a member for a certain amount of time and have posted a certain number of times.
There was a peculiar situation where one candidate achieved zero votes, not even the guy who nominated him voted for him !!

Some of the best mods are quietly doing their thing in the background like Shaggy.

I can see a fight breaking out real quick as some really like Charlie but can't stand Joe and possibly vice versa.

But whatever....

'...can't stand Jo...'

Saddens me to read that, I just don't accept it, what is there to dislike about Joe's posts?

Why didn't he vote for himself, maybe he thought it was corruption, who knows.

You need secondary awards: Mister Congeniality, Mr. Hunky Swimsuit (Id buy a marble bag for that one), Most Curmudgeonly, Most Likely to Get Punched Out, Most Useful, Funniest...

Oh come on. How many categories do you want to win, you greedy bugger?

If the photography forum wants to run a "toggler of the year" or the diy want to run a "handyman of the year" thread then go for it.

No-one is stopping you.

And it might create a bit more interest in the subforums.

You do the forum for a year, come late November you go to the general forum and nominate your 3 favorite posters.
Then you vote.
How difficult is that?

Not quite sure what you mean ?

We all know how it works and can see it is struggling to attract posters.

This thread is about increasing popularity in the POTY thread.

Definitely don’t know what this one is about or who it is addressed to . ?

And at the end of the day the traditional POTY thread is about having a bit of fun at Xmas. I don't think anyone takes it seriously.
We poke each other in the eye and even the Mods join in.

I agree with that totally, I do post some comments on it and I enjoy the banter.
But you cannot deny this years was quite a feeble affair, could have been down to the connecting issues or the fact that the winner was nailed on or maybe that people don’t like the fact that you cannot change your vote anymore so there was no real dirt digging or slandering to try and gain votes ?
If it was the latter then we (TVF members) have a chance to voice our opinion and maybe make some changes to bring back it’s popularity here.

That’s all I am trying to do.

In the final round I see a total vote count of 134.............in a forum of 20.000 members ( can't find the actual number ) which should tell you something

As I said in a previous post, I know personally of several TV members that feel TV has its favorites and the same names keep appearing time and time again and therefore, this puts off many members from posting, including myself.

There are many TV members I have become to admire over the years, really love their posts that don`t even get a mention.

The only way to create more interest so that more members vote is to have more nominees other than those from the old friends' group.

Nominate them.

Why publish the number of votes ... for 1st round or whatever just publish 1st 2nd 3rd 4th etc ... and for the final don't show the vote count until winner is announced ...of course you will have to do something to make it exciting ... suppose you could post what position the finalist hold without the vote count ..........there again .............

One problem is that POTY has different meanings to different people.  Some feel that the winner should be someone who frequently makes helpful posts on various topics, such as visa issues, or provides more specialised answers on the different forums.  Some would suggest the winner should be someone who regularly makes them laugh, while others would prefer that the winner be someone who shares their political views or feelings on world events.  There is also the likelihood that voting is influenced by someone's posts over a more extended period - far longer than a single year in some cases.  Other than introducing several categories (helpful POTY, humorous POTY, immigration POTY, farmer POTY, petrol head POTY, left wing POTY, right wing POTY...) which would make the entire exercise more cumbersome, and no doubt more bad tempered in the case of the latter two, one possibility is to change the award to post of the year, rather than poster - this still begs the question of how the final posts are to be chosen, but would limit candidates to a single year and allow anyone wishing to vote to weigh them up on a level playing field without necessarily being familiar with the poster themselves.

Or, give two awards; One to the single post that got the most likes in the year, and the other to the poster who got the most likes accumulated over the year.

Its so bad now I'd consider proportional reprrsentation.

The quality content posters have been overlooked in favour of a band of Stars in your Eyes wannabees.

Oh and yes I might know a little myself about running this contest successfully.

I'd vote for that.  Some things just seem to have outlived their relevance and value.

Don`t agree.

It is the posters and those that actively participate on these forums and threads that Thai visa is all about. Without the active posters, TV would be no more than an information database that would fail to attract the sponsors and advertisers. Its members are all part of the mechanism that keeps TV ticking over.

Many really enjoy TV and to some is a mainstream of their online social activities similar to facebook. Must admit, I am one of those who has become addicted to TV. There are also those who take events like the poster of the year quite seriously. I`ve checked out some of the periods of time posters have been members and there are those that have been members right from the beginning and still active on TV. This is why I believe all members should have an equal chance to become a poster of the year rather than just a dominant few that I feel have been trying to achieve some kind of celebrity status on TV and why I for one won`t vote for these people.
