U.S. House passes bills that would end government shutdown, without wall funds

Well he will not cave in for starters. Prolonging the shut down is as risky for the dems as it is for Trump. it could be argued that as everybody says Trump is so stupid that why wouldn't the dems want to run against him?

Trump will hold out along as he can. If he ends up finished that's it but if it goes on long enough there will also be a huge amount of damage also done to the democrats. The country is divided for every person that blames Trump there will be one that blames the dems.

The dems should give trump the lousy 3 billion or whatever compromise is offered. Getting rid of Trump might be a  short term gain if you destroy your entire party to do it. To get Trump out the dems will have to be willing to go over the brink and I don't think they have the political balls to carry on as long.

Why would anybody but Trump supporters blame the Democrats when the problem lies solely with Trump?

If the Republicans in the Senate block the Democrats bill, they are just as bad as Trump and deserve to be decimated at the next election.

Whether the dimwits realize it or not the southern border of the US is much too porous and needs to be sealed. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with an extreme liberal supposedly leading the representatives, we can only hope that the Senate has a better balance and a semblance of common sense.

You would have thought the dimwits would have passed this border wall deal when they had a majority in both houses.... and it would seem that the dimwits in the senate, have abrogated their duties and responsibilities to the orange clown in the White House.... so .... “no” to the hope of common sense from that quarter.

Trump’s crack team of Border Wall negotiators. They will be sent south of the border to convince Mexico toupee.

I will take my coat and leave now.

who are the 4 Simpsons standing behind Homer?

I actually would have given Trump some serious props if he would have just stuck to his guns like any real man would. He said he owned the shutdown, ok. But then he renegged out of that statement and went right back to being as slimy as can be. The man is below the worst bottom dwellers on earth, it is so obvious. Walk into a maximum security prison and I will trust those guys far before a person like Trump.

Or is the inference that the many (majority ? ) who do not support Trump will also become antagonistic towards the Dems because of the compounding effects of a prolonged  shutdown? The propoganda  machines  will be working at full speed on  both sides  to allocate  blame.

This pathetic showdown over a token and ineffective wall is only going to do damage all round.

Yes thankfully somebody understands what a bunch of bozos the entire government will look like. The news is saying $5 billion has already been spent already on the shut down.

The dems want power so badly they couldn't let this "ineffective waste of money" by because they are scared they can't beat Trump if they do.

Sort of sad with all the disparaging remarks about Trump's intelligence that the dems are still deathly afraid he will win.

Quite the press conference just now. This should be amusing to see the gnashing of teeth after it has been broken into soundbites as posters wake up in Thailand. I am beginning to think Trump doesn't care about a second term and actually holds this to be more important.

I am not saying this has ruined his chances anymore than anything else. I just mean he is willing to go as far as he has to. I don't see the democrats outlasting it until people say why don't the dems just give him the 5 billion? Trump isn't afraid to be the bad guy.

One more supreme court justice would be the icing  on the cake. After that hand the job off to somebody younger that can dismantle the democrats.

This is important because he cares about his second term. "Build the wall" was the cornerstone of his campaign. It was the one promise that appealed to his base more than anything else. Immigration is his base's primary concern. Just as  with Brexit in the UK, where immigration was the keystone of the Brexit campaign. It appeals to the irrational primal fears of those who are, deep down, nationalistic racists.

He must build the wall before November 2020, not to do so will destroy his base and cost him his re-election. It's the only promise that his base absolutely demand that he keeps.

Okay so it is a simple blinking contest then. Trump won't blink first. He is a terrible heartless man who doesn't\'t care about  anything  or anybody. He has the edge here. He also has to look strong to Xi.

If I were a betting man, I would say that Trump will find a pathetic excuse for not building the wall, that his base will accept. As always, Hillary/the Democrats are his primary deflection tool. He's already creating "alternative facts" to ensure that the Democrats take the fall in his base's eyes.

Alternatively he could get creative to find the funds for the wall. He's already floated the idea of using "emergency powers".

What is for certain is that the Democrats won't relent and approve the funds as this would be the final nail in the coffin for their base.

it's a Mexican stand off pardon the pun. Advantage is to Trump because he is the incumbent. He has two years. The dems need to get something going if they hope to put together anything in the next year. The campaigns have already started. I would say the dems are more desperate than Trump is at this point.

Your last sentence has nothing to do with this, but yes, have to agree with the rest.

Trump will not give in.

Not so sure about that. Xi sees trump cave in to a bunch of liberals it won't be good. he is about to meet Xi next week and has to go to the meeting with a position of strength not licking his wounds because his sense of white privilege has been put in check. Think about how Xi runs China, it is with an iron fist.

The dems know they are engaging in a useless exercise here. This is no longer about a wall.

It's about clearly identifying the cause of this debacle. This is the same bill that was previously CREATED by and APPROVED in the Senate word for word. This will clearly put the fault in Trump's lap. And yes, let's hope he caves in as some of the Republicans are already doing.

200 Years ago the USA stole the land on the border from the Mexicans and now wants to build a wall to stop them entering what was Once their land. Funny for the Country that set its goal on destroying the British and other Colonial empires while expanding its own.

As the Native Americans are supposed to say " White Man talks with Forked tongue".

Things changed when Pelosi said Trump wouldn't  get the funding through the house and 5.7 billion for the wall passed easily. After the senate rejected that they sent the newer version through. Then the senate wouldn't touch it knowing Trump wasn't aboard.

Well before that Mexico and America stole that same land from the Native Americans. Waves of millions of unchecked immigrants didn't work out that well for the indigenous population. The USA didn't steal anything from Mexico as it was never legitimately Mexico's land in the first place.

The entire premise of the feel  good story that America is a melting pot of immigrants  is founded on the genocide basic to this countries birth. That makes it a laughable argument.

And the latest bill the senate approved has been sent back by the new congress for Trump to either sign or accept that he is the single obstruction keeping the government shut down. Try to keep up:

By al means seek to find the details (you can do that yourself, nobody here owes you the details), but don’t make out that the details have not been discussed and received bipartisan support in the House.

Actually the vague "rational border security" statement of another liberal poster is what the reply was, parroted by dems constantly and never once clearly defined what it means, what evidence based data backs up this mysterious mythical "technology" based approach?

If the cbp wants a barrier where they want it to do their job well then install it.

But obviously you have these precise details and have great intellectual insight as to how they are better than a physical barrier and the sensors and cameras that go with them.

I await your Supreme wisdom and insight.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46763940

US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared for a partial shutdown of the US government - now entering its third week - to last years.

After meeting top Democrats, he also said he could declare a national emergency to bypass Congress and build a US-Mexico border wall.

Mr Trump insisted he would not sign any bill without wall funding, which Democrats adamantly oppose.

Around 800,000 federal workers have been without pay since 22 December.

The Republican president initially gave a positive account of Friday's meeting at the White House, describing it as "very productive".

Now please tell us all who is responsible for the government shut down and owns it lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels.

The house is trying to open the government shut down, yet Trump is hell bent on keeping it closed for years if needs be, with the help of the Republicans in the Senate.

Tell us all once again, WHO shut down the government and is willing to keep it shut for years if he chooses to.

so, previously these same Dems voted for a barrier, but now its not needed and is "immoral", amazing:

The Secure Fence Act of 2006, which was passed by a Republican Congress and signed by President George W. Bush, authorized about 700 miles of fencing along certain stretches of land between the border of the United States and Mexico.

The act also authorized the use of more vehicle barriers, checkpoints and lighting to curb illegal immigration, and the use of advanced technology such as satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles.

At the time the act was being considered, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer were all members of the Senate. (Schumer of New York is now the Senate minority leader.)

Obama, Clinton, Schumer and 23 other Democratic senators voted in favor of the act when it passed in the Senate by a vote of 80 to 19.

I guess that Trumps rational discussion, pun intended.
