As a non American can I ask was Obama drafted?

I feel drafting is archaic anyway. In a democracy you should have the right to choose.

President Obama was born in 1961. US involvement in the Vietnam war ended in 1973.

Trump is the story of the day every single day. He got nationally syndicated  air time for nearly two hours today. CNN can't live with out him. Look at the news stories on social media you visit including this site and there is little doubt that Trump is the focal point.

From the amount of attention they pay him you'd think he was the President.

As much as the wall is going to cost, if it is built using US labour and materials then it will create more jobs. Is this not a good thing?

I don't personally think the wall should be built but he got voted in to power with the wall being one of the main points. Unless his supporters voice that they don't want the wall anymore then I guess this stalemate will continue.

Without a doubt you are correct. There would be some very short term employment and material gains from building a wall.

There would be sustained employment and material AND ECONOMIC gains from a program to address USA's crumbling infrastructure.

Winning!!

It may be possible that prolonging the shutdown will slow down the legal system, stalling the progress of certain criminal investigations...

Well, Mueler's Grand Jury just got a 6 month extension today.

Ya know, for a Chief Executive position that has less power than most global Chief Executives, he sure likes playing withall the levers he does have.

The day to day story of the dems isn't that interesting. Even Ted Kopple admonished CNN for being  too Trump-centric.

Why "Even Ted Kopple"?

And Trump is the President. Whereas Fox devotes a huge amount of time to an ex-Presidential candidate. Now that truly is weird. Also to a certain new Latina member of congress. More weirdness.

The draft was over before Obama was eligible- first President in modern times to fall within that criteria.

Yup, and that's pretty telling right there. Normally they are appointed for 18 months unless compelling reasons are presented to a judge in motion to extend. Those compelling reasons were obviously presented in briefs by Mueller's team, which the trial judge found compelling, even though Mueller and his team refused to comment at all to the press, as is usual.

The sh!t is gonna hit the fan, just not as soon as many of us would like.

The whole thing is really worrying.

Trump is ill. He suffers from frontotemporal dementia.

Some people with frontotemporal dementia are restless,  aggressive and easily irritable. Others retire, become dull and indifferent to friends and relatives, and find nothing to enjoy. Those affected often misjudge everyday situations. For example, they make inappropriate or embarrassing remarks that they would not have heard before. Some joke loudly about strangers in the bus, others start to steal. When addressed, people with Frontotemporal Dementia are baffled or outraged - their self-criticism has suffered severely. Other possible symptoms are cravings and "tics": many sufferers just repeat what they have heard like an echo.

Plus the whole thing combined with his personality shaped over time of his life:

addicted to being the center of attention all the time, prone to megalomania and billionaire's posture.

Unfit as president.

It really is clear from Trump supporters postings on this board. Trump really could shoot somebody point blank on Fifth Avenue and they would still support him.

Oh not many actually support him anymore , they just post 'sad ' emojis and attempt to deflect.

His entire presidency has been so undignified and shambolic that its become almost impossible to put a positive spin on it unless resorting to blatant misrepresentations or downright lies.

There will of course still be a hard core base , even Hitler had friends to the last , though many of these have been reduced to mindless denial ( its not easy for one to admit to such a shocking mistake )

He has next to no chance now of being re-elected , even if his legal problems allow such a bid.

He will go down as the worst POTUS in living memory and worst of all ( in his mind ) he probably wont make any money out of it.

It is really clear somebody could sneak into America and shoot people and the left would defend them. It would still be politically incorrect to say illegal immigrant.

But but Hilary , Obama , Commie Pinko liberals , the bogey man......

Judges don't make decisions based on political affiliation. They have to base decisions on established law. If not, they are overturned by higher courts on appeal. Sure, judges have political opinions, but decisions for extensions of Grand Juries are very serious and must be based on cause. This thing has resulted in a lot of bad guys being caught, and if you find that objectionable you must not like the rule of law in society. There is still one last ringleader that will likely fall and we all know who that is.

*Oh, and by the way, Mueller had to hurry and do this because Trump's shutdown threatens to shut down the federal court system.

It is not yet known how the federal government shutdown will affect the grand jury's schedule. The federal court system has not yet run out of funding, but may by the end of next week.

A reporter asked him if he was threatening this and he answered he wasn't threatening anybody. he didn't do it so all of this self righteous anger is all over nothing. Maybe watch the entire press conference if you haven't. It was quite entertaining Donald was in good form.

So why say it in the first place?

He is just digging a deeper hole for himself.

We are not back in the days of Tricky Dick Nixon.

Everything Trump says or does is recorded as are all the lies he has told and when the time comes and he denies ever saying or doing something it will be brought to his attention.

Telling the truth is easy. You only need to remember one thing. Telling lies is much harder because you have to remember which lie you told to who.

If you aren't interested in genuine discourse  don't reply to me.

Funnily enough, even when one is interested in genuine discourse, the same rule of thumb seems to apply.

so.... arguably your sentence should read... “if you are interested in genuine discourse, don’t reply to me”   ????????????????????

Interesting article from Forbes yesterday on where the idea for Trump's wall came from. As you might easily guess with Trump's lazy intellect, the idea did not come from security analysts following years of study or through analysis of any evidence the wall would reduce illegal immigration, but rather as an idea from two political consultants to keep attention deficit disorder Trump on message.

Quote

in January 2015, he tried it out at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a presidential cattle call put on by David Bossie’s group, Citizens United. ‘One of his pledges was, ‘I will build a Wall,’ and the place just went nuts,’ said Nunberg. Warming to the concept, Trump waited a beat and then added a flourish that brought down the house. ‘Nobody,’ he said, ‘builds like Trump.’”

So, in fact, the wall concept was something Trump found his base loved in his political rallies to he doubled down on it, and that allowed him to get elected, and now he is taking this to the end as he knows this is his base's defining issue without which he cannot survive.

Yep.  Look at the lies he's told in the last week alone.  Starting 2019 with a (fake) bang:
