Old lady's pension fund goes missing from Thai bank A man went on Facebook to complain that his aging mother's pension money had been stolen from her account. The mother who lives in Pai was visiting relatives in Chacherngsao for 6 months and had her bank book with her. In common with many country people like Kunthon Limchayanan's mum she did not have an ATM card, debit card or internet banking. But when her account was checked 290,000 baht had been taken out on November 29th. The branch in Panomsarakham said they had no record of a withdrawal. But they promised to look into it. Kunthon told Daily News Online that a friend of his had had a similar problem involving 200,000 baht at the same branch and the ID number of the staff member concerned was the same as the withdrawal on this latest occasion. Both his friend and now Kunthorn have made police complaints though the bank have promised a resolution of the current case by tomorrow. The bank was not named though the Facebook post said it was one with a "sky blue banner". Years ago one of my wife's friends showed up unexpectedly at our house asking for a loan. Her story was interesting. She had worked for some bank for years but was recently let go. Many, perhaps most Thais do not distinguish between a loan (which must be paid back) and a gift (which doesn't have to be paid back). If the money's in the bank, it's theirs. Thais aren't very good with the whole 'obligation and honour' thing. It's a major reason why the level of corruption in Thailand is what it is, and it isn't unique to Thailand; most African nations are exactly the same, which is why they have such a problem with corruption. Some years ago it was found that a bank officer from Kasikorn Bank was withdrawing money from low-activity accounts. It doesn't have to be the woman's family. Sometimes it's bank staff and/or their relations. But either way, the local banks never seem particularly quick or keen to help get to the bottom of things. A senior staff member in one of the major Thai banks told me that the biggest work load she has is chasing bad debts. That is manager's issuing loans to people who don't exist using assets that also don't exist. She said one island in particular was the hub.
