I'm confused so if there are any Mac experts out there please advise. Do I need a AirPort Express and internal card in addition to a WLAN router to provide wireless access to my new MacBook and my old iBook?

The MacBook has the adsl line, the iBook will be in the apartment directly upstairs from me.

Can someone walk me through purchasing the right configuration?

Many thanks - O

You can set up your MacBook as a wireless internet transmitter. I don't know if it's strong enough to reach to your upstairs but give it a try.

Under the Apple menu go to file sharing and click on "internet" then click "start" on "Internet sharing" .

No, you don't need anything extra.

A WLAN router provides the wireless network. iBook and MacBook connect to it with their built-in wireless cards.

That's it.

There are other types of DSL routers that do not provide a wireless network, for these you would need a wireless router, but it will be easier for you to just get a WLAN router.

The setup looks like this:

Phone line -> Splitter (a small thing you get for free from the DSL provider) -> WLAN router

Go to your apple menu (upper left corner of screen) and click on "About this Mac" .... then when the screen appears click on "more nformation" and you can see all the technical hardware and software details of your Mac.

nikster,

I don't think my iBook (bought in 1994) came/has a wireless card. How can I check? Is there an external alternative?

Thanks for help,

They didn't make iBooks in 1994 - see here:

Perhaps let us know what the exact model and make of this machine is. It's either not an iBook or not made in 1994.

Thanks for the link. Yes it is a Blueberry iBook Clamshell Power PC G3 300Mhz. wikipedia says Airport 802.11b, was optional. Can't remember that far back but I do't think I ordered an airport card. Anyway to tell?

Thanks - O

Pretty sure at this point that My iBook does not have the airport card. Also Apple is not making them anymore, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Any help much appreciated.

The original iBook (known internally at Apple as either the "Space Clam" or the "Toilet Seat") had an optional WiFi card. The Card was replaced by a newer, smaller module, which used the same connector. The latest generation uses a different connector. Try Craigslist or eBay. Perhaps one of the shops in Panthip Plaza or Fortune IT City has an old one. Too, the old Airport wireless hubs (the ones that look like a pyramid) have an internal wireless card of the type you require.
