What is wrong with having a rule that says hair longer than a certain length must be tied up in a bun or similar? That was always the rule in the UK armed forces and police etc and worked well there.

But that would demand logical thinking, not taught in schools or teacher training colleges here!

What is wrong having a rule regarding hair length? Absolutely nothing.

You are missing the point on this, the teacher had no right what so ever to cut the girls hair.

Face is a MAJOR thing here, and that teacher humiliated the girl in front of other students.

That is a very BIG no no here.

  • In the west an action like this would be classed as physical assault and a criminal offence.

  • Maybe i am wrong, but i am sure this rule about hair length was abolished a couple of years ago. If that is the case, school director and teachers involved should be sacked.

If they paid Thai teachers more than 10,000 baht per month, then maybe they could get some who actually knew enough to fill the class time, instead of spending their time enforcing stupid archaic rules.

"Rules" in Thailand LOL

I really like the long hair on thai girls.....what a shame they have to cut it.

Why do you think most adult Thai women have long hair?

They hated the short hair as kids ... probably a trick by the patriarchal society to make them fit their taste? Oh, well it is no actually a patriarchal society ... but more a matriarchal one ????

I agree about face, but I saw it more as the teacher trying to make face over her class, by humiliating one of the students.

Same problem in our house.

My son aged 18, in his last year at High school.

Two weeks ago he had his hair cut by the local barber, neat and tidy, the usual cut he has. Three days later his class teacher told him that it was too long on top, so cut a handful out of the crown of his head. So back to the barber to get it recut to the length of the teacher's cut.

He has always had his hair neat and tidy because 3 years ago the school had a blitz on all the boys hair. Any student whose hair was deemed be be incorrect had a handful cut out, using a corkscrew type cutter. All the boys in his class were given this treatment. It left a cut of about 8 inches long, down to the scalp. So then all the recuts were so short to match the very low depth of the teachers cut.  So they all made an effort to keep their hair in the accepted manner.

Thankfully he finishes at the school in 5 weeks. He has no time for any of the teachers who did the cutting.

I know what I'd be doing with the cutter, and it wouldn't be cutting his hair.

Good job his Dad is you and not me.

this is 2019....no wonder thailand is classed as a 'third world' country.

in the west, the courts and the parents would deal with these abusive teachers and schools....

it would NOT  be tolerated in any way----in thailand--saving face is more inportant than common decency..

If the rules stated 9 inch and the girl after repeated warnings still hadn't been cut then she should have been expelled until her hair was the allowed length or the rules changed.

Physical assault by 2 teachers shouldn't have happened. The girl filming should have been given a merit for highlighting the draconian practices still being committed in the school.

Right. And you don't see a plan behind the constant Math/Physics olympiads? Yiou know the one where you get a gold medal for getting 29 right out of 43? The ones where you can get dozens of gold medals and then brag about it to the press.

And isn't that the school where the Director was recently demanding 500,000THB to let applicants kids in? Tea money, Thais will be Thais I suppose.

And you mentioned schools plural, but quote school singular.

Wanna buy a bridge?

I had a work colleague (Thai) university educated engineer, who had no clue what the moon was and he had no interest whatsoever in finding out.

Why is it that there are other girls in the video wandering around with hair just as long as the one having her hair cut?????

But as netizens slammed the actions of the school came news that the friend who filmed the shearing has had her grades cut as a punishment for causing the school to lose face.

Typical Thai nonsense!  The video did not cause the school to lose face!  The actions of the school caused them to lose face!  Kill the messenger is still alive and well in Thailand!!

Actually Thailand never was a third world country. And while it is still "a developing nation" it is in most things a first world country just like Germany.

But developing into WHAT, is the big and relevant question!

that's why in the West it becomes increasingly difficult to bring up children in a good way.

Sadly that is the Thai mentality for you all over. Rather than set a good example in being positive about actually learning something useful, the schools follow archaic rules and then when they lose face, strike out against the person who revealed their idiocy. Utterly disgraceful, but very much the norm, and probably a fair contributor to the poor academic performance of kids nationwide.

It takes a lot to get my blood boiling, but not here in the "Land of Smiles, "no brains up top"

Ok the big question How can the school lose face if they did not do anything wrong They did wrong and lost face.

To dock a student marks for filming this is draconian

If that would have been my daughter the teacher who did this would end up bold and shaved with my oldest razor blade that I use downstairs.

I was just told that for a teacher to be employed as a teacher, they must have a hairdressers certificate as well as a teaching degree, is this true or is someone pulling my leg.... ????

Brilliantly stated, Robsamui.

It is the experience of many of us that Thai graduates know vanishingly little about anything scholarly.

It is frightening, and very disheartening.

And as for Thais' analytical skills and the capacity for independent thinking - don't even get me started on that one!

So right, I'm afraid. And here is a good reason why. Wednesday the 16th was Wan khru, right. So all the kids get a day off being taught. Here in Udorn they all get ANOTHER day off because it's Udornthani's birthday with all teachers etc out in traditional dancing parades. As I have said before on other threads, the Thai educational is still heavily bent on teaching traditional culture at the expense of necessary topics for the modern world.

Yeah...I have heard of those mystical beings as well!

From field of work, I speak to sales executives on a daily basis and some of my appointments start with "Please sapeak englit saloly"! and I have said nothing else than "Good morning and thank you for your time. Would you like a cup of coffee?"

Mind you: I work in tourism, where "englit" should be generally understood as the chance of working with people from...well...Farangistan, is a common possibility!

I can't help that you are not in a position to talk to intelligent Thai's

Absolutely disgusting bullies! Fire those awful "teachers".

So, if the rules regarding hair is to do with LENGTH, why is the teacher measuring the WIDTH???  Duhh!!! Oh, I forgot... she’s a teacher... 555

You know what they say - 'never mind the quality, feel the width.'

Happens all the time as well as canning. Nothing new and it will never change.

"canning." ? As in putting in a can? Or "caning"? (Sorry - couldn't resist!)

During the video, in the background, you will see at least one student with long hair in a horse's tail. Why is this particular student being singled out for overlength hair? There probably is an ugly underlying reason. To us westerners, the school deserves the social media backlash but Thai officialdom will say that the will of the students must never undermine the school hierarchy or the whole edifice will crumble and turn to chaos.

The school administration and teacher didn't cause the loss of face?

Egads.
