130 guns destroyed as fire breaks out at Surin defence volunteer base

A fire burnt down the living quarters and firearms storage room of a defence volunteer base in Surin, destroying 130 guns and ammunition, officials said on Tuesday.

 

Officials at the Surin 1 Defence Volunteer Company said the fire had started at 3.35pm on Monday, and that officials from several agencies were still checking the cause of the blaze.

 

Eight fire engines took an hour to control the blaze after it had already consumed the entire building, located on the Surin-Prasat road in Mueang district’s Tambon Chaniang.

 

During the fire, explosions were heard as ammunition went up in flames, officials said.

 

More than 130 M16 assault rifles, shotguns and pistols, along with ammunition, were kept in the storage room.

 

The fire also damaged a vehicle of the defence company.

 

Reporters were not allowed to enter the compound on Tuesday morning as the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

Has anybody counted the remains of 130 rifles?    Pu-Ying, the last Emperor of China threatened to check the contents of the imperial treasure houses in the forbidden city.  And oh, what a coincidence a great fire broke out before they could check what was missing.

That's an excellent, and I'm sure unanswerable, question.  But whoever it is, they obviously HAD a lot of guns ready for the fight!

 

I wonder if they managed to save their tanks from the inferno...and submarines too???

Totally agree.  Fires have always been a good way of balancing the books.  Not surprised they only give an estimate of how many guns have been destroyed, they have still to work out what the number needs to be.  The numbers of guns and amount of ammunition, in a properly run armoury, is always known.

Cause of the fire should be interesting.

Whilst there are military camps all over Thailand and Thailand has "enjoyed" military administrations for the majority of its post-WWII history, Surin is not very far from the site of a recent deadly military battle with Cambodian forces. Last time I visited, this area at Phra Wiharn was still controlled by the military.

Surely you're not suggesting that more than 130 M16 assault rifles, shotguns and pistols, along with ammunition, are no longer able to be accounted for?

Yes, when you visit some of the disputed border temples here, relations between the Thai & Cambodian troops are relaxed and friendly - people wander back & forth over the (invisible) red line, no sweat. But in others, they are anything but relaxed, troops are quite separate and they follow you around as you do your tourist bit ... and as you step over the invisible, one lot of troops vanish & a new lot in different uniforms appear.

 

All of this only a couple of kilometers as the crow flies from my family farm. Which was regularly bombarded by Khmer Rouge mortars only 2 or 3 decades ago. The family regularly fled the village as the explosions started. They would return a week later to find all the buffalos gone ...
