"Thais are suckers for a sob story" says media as Chinese beggars cream off 3,000 baht a day

Thai media Daily News said that reports that Chinese beggars were flying to Thailand to make 3,000 baht a day on the streets of the Land of Smiles were hardly surprising.

They said that Thais were suckers for a sob story and would readily give money to beggars.

Maj-Gen Kritthaphon Yisakhorn said that action was necessary to protect Thailand's image.

It mattered not whether the beggars were Thai or Chinese - if the law is broken in this way they can expect prosecution, he said.

Laws allow for beggars to be jailed for a month and fined up to 10,000 baht or both.

The Maj-Gen, a deputy at the tourist police, said that investigations were underway to see if the foreign beggars and their gang had contravened human trafficking laws as well as those concerning begging and vagrancy.

They have fake Chinese monks hanging around the Nana area now, asking for cash donations, you pull your camera out and they run like hell.

Please beat them. What would you do if a fake priest walked up and hit you up for a donation? Shameless.
