BANGKOK — A project to connect three international airports by high-speed rail was suspended after the conglomerate backing the project changed its terms.

The official who helped oversee the project, which would link Bangkok’s two airports with one on the eastern seaboard, said Charoen Pokphand Group, or CP, unexpectedly demanded doubling its operating concession from 50 to 99 years.

Typical - take the concession away from CP and award it to the next in line - simple !

  • What are chicken people doing building rail lines in the first place. regards worgeordie

  • CP is a monster...might as well just rename it Omni-Corp.

Well I'm shocked, stunned and not even slightly amused.

I was going to say, that certainly appears to be a chicken-sh** move on CP's part....

CP, by the way, basically means Dhanin Chearavanont et al, the richest billionaire in Asia... So they've got their fingers in a lot more than frozen chicken legs....

Fingers in frozen chicken legs?

Does that relate to the old question  Should chicken be eaten with fingers?

I think it has more to do with Dhanin's various corporate entities including everything from CP's food and grocery businesses, the 7/11 empire, real estate development, True and Truevisions cable TV, and on and on....

Don't think he is even in the top 10.

There'd be a 7/11 at every station. So CP has got that going for then I suppose.

The normal default source for such things is Forbes magazine and website:

Thought you were talking about "ASIA" mate...

the ping an insurance deal with the chinese state has also helped, this taken from 6 years ago cnbc;

"CP Group, whose products include feed for chickens and pigs, has a long history in China.

Chearavanont - worth $9 billion according to Forbes magazine - also appears to have strong political connections in Beijing. State-run China Development Bank is helping to finance CP Group's Ping An stake acquisition, according to HSBC"

looks like another chinese state rail contract like the 20 billion dollar malaysia contract. China loves to control over inflated debts through rail and infrastructure

Government should sue them for billions of baht, and award the contract to next candidate. Show CP who is control here.

Who's got the power?

the government has article 44

CP has article 7/11

What are chicken people doing building rail lines in the first place.

But, but, but - don't you know who Mr. CP is? Which is most likely the reason for wanting to alter the terms agreed.....

(However, I agree entirely with what you are saying).

Building a 'chicken run'?

Not so simple when

  • State-owned China Railway Construction Co ( https://asia.nikkei.com/Companies/China-Railway-Construction-Corp.-Ltd ) joined CP Group consortium together with Italian-Thai Development and CH-Karnchang along with subway line operator Bangkok Expressway and Metro.
  • Highly qualified Japan's Hitachi, French state-owned railway operator SNCF and Germany's Siemens did not bid (maybe because of laws against bribes and collusion?).

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Business-Deals/China-Railway-joins-CP-Group-to-bid-for-Thai-high-speed-rail

The tail is definitely wagging the dog. Can you imagine a company in the West dictating to the people who it is bidding for a contract to how it will run things (Edit: Whoops, I forgot 'Lobbyists' in the US! ????).

The likes of CP really need their monopolies broken up as they stifle competition.
