Andy Anderson (pictured) has lost his battle with cancer after he announced the diagnosis on Facebook earlier this month

Drummer for The Cure Andy Anderson has died at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer, his former band mate has confirmed.

Keyboardist Lol Tolhurst confirmed that the musician died at home surrounded by loved ones just before 6pm last night.

He said: 'Andy Anderson was a true gentleman and a great musician with a wicked sense of humor which he kept until the end, a testament to his beautiful spirit on the last journey.'

The drummer announced he had been diagnosed with the disease just earlier this month in a Facebook post.

Was never a Cure aficionado, or any other band for that matter, but it was definitely part of the radio-play tapestry growing up, and at a few points over the years since.  I forget about them for long stretches then one day, "Oh yeah, The Cure!", and it's like flipping through photographs, remembering an old friend.  Man, where did all the time go.  ????

In my opinion, the Cure were one of the greatest bands of the past 50 years, and will be remembered for a century or more. Some of their ballads are beyond profound, Robert Smith is a truly great poet, songwriter and singer, and alot of their songs pass the test of time. I am not referring to their "pop" songs, but their ballads. Their true Gothic Rock period. For me, Disintegration, And Wish were their two most profound albums. Barely a weak song on either album, and many of those songs sound absolutely timeless today. Songs like Pictures of you, Last dance, Lullaby, Homesick, Apart, Trust, A letter to Elise, and To wish impossible things, are stunning musical masterpieces, that are moving, heartfelt, powerful, and classic. Some of their other albums also contained great songs like A Forest, from Seventeen Seconds.

Granted, their music is not for everybody. My favorites were the dark songs, from the 1980's and early 1990's, and this band did dark better than most bands have ever done. They captured life, tragedy, a pathos, and a somberness in a way that was, and still is incredibly moving.

Anderson was only with the Cure for two years, back in 1983 to 1984. But, he was a good drummer.

I guess I am not alone. They have sold over 27 million albums, and will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

I never really got into the Cure in the 80s and 90s. Where i could appreciate them they werent really my cup of tea.

But last night i listened to the songs you mentioned and absolutely loved them, especially "Pictures of You". Im glad i read your post as I have a whole new set of songs to explore. ????
