rooster59
Tourism Dept pushes for Thailand to become international film destination Na-ark Rojanasuvan BANGKOK, 02 March 2019, (NNT) - The Tourism Department will organize Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2019 (TIFDF 2019) from March 25th to April 2nd. Since 2013, the annual event has been a vital force in promoting Thailand as a prime location for shooting international films and helped to generate income for the Kingdom. It has also drawn foreign tourists to the country’s famous attractions being featured in these films. The department’s data show that a total of 714 films were shot in Thailand last year, generating 3.1 billion baht in revenue. The Thai government’s policy to attract international filmmakers through various incentives have also contributed to the figure. According to Director-General of the Tourism Department Anan Wongbenjarat , the 7th Thailand International Film Destination Festival which will kick off today will feature a competition on short films in Thailand being held under the concept “Beyond Destination Thailand.” He explained that these films had been shot in secondary destinations, which is part of the government’s policy to promote 55 lesser-known provinces. The result of the short film competition will be announced on April 2nd. Free viewing of international films being shot in Thailand will be held from March 27th to 31st at Siam Paragon Cineplex. -- nnt 2019-03-03

LomSak27
How time flies. Has it been twenty years since the filming of “The Beach” degenerated into an absolute clusterpuck?! Perhaps that is enough time to pretend it never happened and attract a new group of directors and production companies. There are still the gullible who believe the brouhaha about the filming of The Beach was due to ecological and environmental concerns. IT was not. It was part of the political fallout form the 97 meltdown and was used to discredit the government in power, at the time. Western film producers and companies remember this and how they got caught holding the bag. The Tourism Department has their work cut out for them. Our hopes and prayers are with you.

dave s
"It has also drawn foreign tourists to the country’s famous attractions being featured in these films." Ironically, one of the other topics featured in the right hand column when I read this item was Thai authorities don’t know if Maya Bay will re-open to tourists "The bay, made famous by the movie The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has been closed to visitors since 2018, after mass tourism destroyed bay’s coral ecosystem. ... The ecosystem is starting to recover, but it could be decades before it fully recovers, experts have said." "
