Repatriating money to the UK - when in the UK

Featured Replies

I'm a retired Brit. Soon I may want to repatriate my 800,000 baht retirement visa extension money from Thailand to the UK - because I may be returning to the UK for good.

Half of the money is in a Bangkok Bank baht account (Pattaya), the other half is in a Siam Commercial baht account (Pattaya). I have FETs to cover the money.

Right now I'm in Thailand, and ideally I'd do it before I return to the UK later this year. But I may want to hedge my bets and wait and do this once I'm back in the UK.

Some years ago I spoke to both banks and they said it wouldn't be a problem, especially if the UK sterling bank account is in my name (which it is). I'd just need to fax them various bits of paperwork (photocopy of passport etc). They'll convert it to sterling when they send it - which is fine by me.

Has anyone else done this?

I don't want to rely as a backup on withdrawing the money bit by bit from UK ATM machines using my Thai ATM cards. And what I certainly don't want to happen is that I have to make a special trip from the UK to Thailand for the sole purpose of going into the banks personally and making sure they send the money back.

Will the banks be as good as their word? What do you think?

Thanks.
