The state-run Transport Company will increase its bus and passenger-van services by 3,000 to a total of some 9,000 trips per day from April 10-13, in order to accommodate a sharp rise in the number of passengers expected to travel out of Bangkok ahead of the long Songkran holidays period.

Transport Company’s managing director, Jirasak Yaowatsakul, on Monday said the increase in services would accommodate about 200,000 passengers a day.

For journeys back to Bangkok, the company will lay on about 8,100 trips a day from April 14-17, he added.

For the convenience of passengers, the company has suggested that travellers make advance bookings through its websitewww.transport.co.th, at counter services or via the 1490 call centre.

Earlier, the government warned that maximum penalties would be meted out to drunk and reckless drivers, as well as to motorcyclists without crash helmets, if they are involved in road accidents during the Songkran festival.

Hundreds of people are killed, with thousands more injured, during the annual Songkran holidays – and most of the accidents involve motorcyclists or drunk drivers.

Motorists and motorcyclists caught drinking and driving will also have their vehicles impounded.

I remember a number of years back I booked an overnight VIP bus from Songkran to Chiang Rai over Songkran. Arrived at the terminal, got in what was indeed a very nice bus, and departed. A few kms out of town, it stopped. We were all booted off and put into another bus, which was far from VIP... In fact the word dilapidated comes to mind. They pulled a bus swap on us! That's a whole new level of sly. ????

As for the upcoming fatality figures during this impending holiday...might as well pack a 747 with people and fly it into a mountain as that is what the figures are equivalent to each time.

Why not to those who are NOT involved?

How many of those 200,000 realise they are not going to make it to where they want to go?

So sad and we will get to read about the gory details on TVN.

So 9,000 trips a day out but only 8,100 a day back in?

Hmm...

Those folks don't want to go back to work for the chinese bosses anymore...they'll start their own shop in their home village and come back after 3 months.

Still not sure what Songkran is about and this after more than 20 years here. Is it that persons can make you completely wet to entertain themselves without any consequences. From my understanding it seems to be like this. Nothing more.

The carnage continues.

I wonder how many brake failure stories we’ll hear. Though, most crashes don’t make the news.

The figures are probably based on the road accident statistics...

20 years here and you still don't know what it's all about?!

It's the traditional Thai New Year, a time when hordes of people make the long journey back home to visit family, rest and have some (well -earned) fun. For whatever reason, this excessive splashing seems to have become so popular only in the last decade or two (or so I've been led to believe).

Although not a big fan of it, the excessive splashing that is, I can understand it. It's one of the few times of the year when they can truly have fun.

In Pattaya the water fights are one week. That is far too long.

The difference must be the carnage.

The safety of buses is a real concern for me. Both reading the news and stastastics are scary indeed... As is the top heavy bus design.. Indeed nothing about the bus says "safe" in my mind. Add to that the drivers skill set.....5555

Because of this I've seen little of Thailand... I need to fly to places. There are probably one way car rentals... Monthly rentals are an option. How to you get around Thailand?

What are the statistics on public bus incidents?
