BANGKOK, 12 April 2019 (NNT) –The Excise Department’s tax revenue collection for the first half of fiscal 2019, from October 2018 to March 2019, was 7.62 percent higher year-on-year. The revenue mostly came from taxes on fuel, cars, beer, liquor, and tobacco products.

The Director-General of the Excise Department, Patchara Anuatasilpa, said the excise tax revenue collection in the first six months of this fiscal year totaled 289.63 billion baht, up 7.62 percent on the previous year. Taxes on fuel and related products stood at 97.44 billion baht, followed by taxes on cars at 70.81 billion baht, taxes on beer at 36.75 billion baht, taxes on tobacco-related products at 34.55 billion baht, and taxes on liquor at 33.98 billion baht.

During the first six months of fiscal 2019, the Excise Department took legal action in 17,217 cases of excise tax violations and imposed fines totaling 264 million baht. Most of the cases involved liquor, followed by tobacco, motorcycles, and fuel and related products.

The excise tax revenue collection on liquor exceeded the department’s target by six percent, or about two billion baht. However, the problem of smuggled liquor remains prevalent. In the future, the Excise Department will set clearer regulations and standards on both domestic and imported liquor products, consisting of wine, distilled liquor, fermented liquor, and beer. The department said it will look into certain ingredients, such as lead, copper, iron, and sulfur dioxide, and ferricyanide, which are harmful to Thai people, and the regulations are expected to be announced after the Songkran holiday.

What?! That is appallingly low. We quickly need to introduce yet another steep tax hike on these two commodities... of course with the usual lying-through-our-teeth excuse that it is our duty to "protect citizens' health".

I suppose marijuana and Ecigs aren't harmful enough to be put on the sin tax schedule along with alcohol and tobacco.    Condoms and lubricant would be a nice little money spinner too.

So they're not harmful to non-Thais then?
