I'm flying to Phuket on sunday, but am not really sure when I'll be at the airport. Is it worth booking online in advance, or is it better to book at the airport on the day? Will it be more expensive booking at the airport?

Also, I've lost track of the airport(s) - do all low cost flights to Phuket go from the new airport?

At the moment all 5 carriers to Phuket fly out of the new airport in Bangkok.

The fares on low cost airlines change as the aircraft fills up and time of departure so no fixed rule. There wont be a significant difference in price to buy at the airport or on line.

Usually there are seats available at the airport if it is not a Special holiday in Thailand.

there is only ONE airport in Bangkok operating at the moment (at least until the 24th of March it's the only one), and thats our beloved SWAMP-darling called "Suwannaphum"

as for the Fares: if you book very late, or even buy at the airport, then probably "1-2-GO" is the best deal, as they have fixed fares, and not flexible ones such as NOK or AIRASIA.

though, on sundays, 1-2-GO's fares are always a little more expensive than during weekdays (but then again, at least they dont change).

At the moment, Airasia seems to have 899++ Fares to HKT almost every day of the week,

at least for the late-evening-flights.

Check how much it would cost u with 1-2-GO (okay, I did for you already, its 1.750 Baht INCLUDING the Taxes, so this means they dont have that mentioned WEEKEND-surcharge anymore....), then at ur day of departure, shop around at NOK and AirAsia-counter, and if they are more expensive, you still can choose 1-2-GO (and they have assigned seats and 20 Kg luggage-allowance, though very old an sometimes run-down planes I usually try to avoid).

have a safe journey.....

added:

Have to make a correction.... just continued the farecheck, and 1-2-GO still DO have that sunday-surcharge, at least for the flights to CM, where the fare is 2.250 on sunday, compared to 1.750 on weekdays. not really a bargain then....

But you take your life in your hands with 1-2-Go... spend the extra few Baht and fly a bit more relaxed.... it is just not worth it.
