Nothing has changed?

No.

You totally lost me just on that.

I've posted several times on several threads specifically spelling out all of the things that have changed.

Big 4?

Guess why?

What are you freakin' talking about?

Don't be shy.

Why do you think?

Instead of insinuating some dark motivations, please MAN UP and explicitly say what your conspiracy theory is about.

Because I can't guess it.

Calm down there big boy nothing to get that upset about. The big 4 are the embassies that stopped issuing letters and most here use that abbreviation. Thats the real reason some are leaving because the pensions never even came close to 65k. An ozzie mate showed me his pension which currently comes in at 39k on yesterdays exchange. He will leave without a big dramatic thread on TV

The 800k changed with some seasoning and NOT a reason to run. Combo not know yet..

All these threads saying "Im gone thailand can suck it "  followed by "I have the money but....."  its all complete BS

Its a good cleanse because its the poor that make up most of the bad noise about Thailand on TV especially because they are miserable always living on the edge and no spare cash to buy what they specifically came here for. BYE BYE ????

Sorry for your plight but my experience in Thailand is that people smile, people are friendly and engaging, but probably in direct proportion to my acting/being genuinely friendly and engaging to them

Post again when you reach 90 although going by the tone of your post that's probably 70 years in the future.

What percentage of the 0.0036% of the population do you think would be most effective?

Because that's the proportion of western expats in Thailand's population.

That's nonsense. There are 69,000,000 people living in Thailand.

69,000,000 * 0.0036 / 100 = 2484 expats. I think there are more than 2500 expats living here .....

Maybe you actually meant 0.36% for a total of 250,000 expats?

Cleanse?

Of people?

That's extremely dark.

There was never any need to have 65k monthly to get an embassy letter.

That's what the combo method was for.

Yes I said was because these changes have made trying that extremely problematical.

Are you saying your friend had been lying to the embassy?

If so do you think that means most people were lying?

If so there is no evidence of that.

Your friend could have used the combo method before but are you saying he couldn't have covered the bank portion.

If so do you think that most or all people with income under 65k can't cover the bank portion?

If you do think that you have no evidence of that.

As said the combo method is now very much messed up especially without an embassy letter.

Even the full import without embassy letter has been a radical change. Now requires full monthly import. Before no import.

Again people saying there have been no changes, that only "poor" people are impacted are spreading obviously false information.

On the question of the percentage of people that were lying on their embassy letters, that is unknowable.

Not in ovens just in planes to a better place or so they keep telling us. And never forget it wasnt about the money because they all have it. It was about the smiles or having to pay double in a national park or some other nonsense ????

As I recall from your previous post...you had the resources to meet immigrations requirements...but balked at losing control over the 800,000 baht...

I fear you have made a poor decision moving to another country at your age...without friends or family support...what could possibly go wrong?

You're now playing games and conflating irrelevant anecdotes from random posts and not addressing the larger picture.

I have to admit moving anywhere at 90 without any support structure is problematic.

But what I do think you are increasingly seeing among the long stay expats is what I like to think of as 'Thailand Fatigue'

You suspend disbelief when you first live there, for lots of the craziness, the bureaucratic crap, then it's one last thing that tips you over the edge, especially the older you get

That last straw can be many many things for different people, but I've seen it more than once

The Philippines is no place for a 90yo man.

Thailand is happy old geezers go home. Less potential downside of some Thai hospital picking up the medical tab.

Old stats, but they show how many foreigners are in Thailand.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Thailand

"Foreign residents in Thailand, according to the 2010 census. It was found that there were 2,581,141 of foreign origins, composing around 3.87 percent of Thailand's population."

This stat is interesting.

"In 2010 there were 27,357 Westerners living in the northeastern region, 90 percent living with Thai wives, according to research by the College of Population Studies at Chulalongkorn University in 2017."

That's a lot of sick buffalo getting treatment in Issan.   ????

Yes your calculations are right, also 250,000 expats for 65.000x12 = 195 milliards baths every year + 250,000 expats x 800.000 = 200 milliards baths deposit on the Thais banks and I not speaking about how many milliards baths farangs investments home, business...

Same one believed we have noting to said on this country ? If many expat decided leave the smile country ?

You need to come out of your english "loop".. I think at least you must be english.... My income is reglated as the most by index, so I know of course that I will have less, but still be able to live on it......

I went about 10 with a single account, then decided to tuck some away in  a FD, then got a Thai CC and that needed another FD account. Then a tax rebate obligating an account at another bank. But I can certainly envisage many having a solitary account. KISS method?

You guys are living in a dreamworld,. Come out for God sake and see the sunshine. There are quite a lot of english and american and australia expats here in Thailand, but what the <deleted> dont you understand, that all the rest of us expats (majority), is NOT of your nationalities..... We are having income-letters and do NOT deposit any 800K in the bank. My God gets real and do not talk for the whole world...

Great.  If you can see 25 years into the future for the global, and the Thai economy, perhaps you can tell me what stocks and bonds will be worth 20 times more, in 25 years.  ????

So what you are saying is that I need to have an income in about 25 years of time that is 20 times what I have now in order to survive.....  I say Bullshit with capital B on top of that..

Yeah, thinking about it, I did have a second account, that FD deposit for my credit card.

Another worthless use of money!

I understand Chiang Mai alone has somewhere north of 50,000 expats.

Clearly, English is not your first language.

Allow me to clarify.

Assuming the OP retired at 65, that's still a lengthy working life.  He would have retired with a reasobale pension, or investments earning XXX a month.

XXX was fine 25 years ago, and provided a good lifestyle.  The cost of living has gone up more than his pension, or more than his investments earn, in order to maintain the same lifestyle.

On a side issue, westerners are living longer now, so will need more savings to call upon in the future.  Most people don't think they will live to 90, but in this day and age, it's now quite common to live to 90.

So, fast forward to 2019, when the OP is 90, and XXX doesn't provide much of a lifestyle anymore.  You now need XXXX for the same lifestyle.  Many of the older pensioners can't get the extra "X."

I made a joke that if you knew what the cost of living is 25 years from now, please tell me which stocks and bonds to buy and I will buy some to protect my investments from being eroded away, but you missed this joke.

I will make it simple for you.

Can you tell me how much a Singha beer at a 7/11 will be in the year 2044?  In effect, this is what people need to consider when asking themselves "how much will I need in my retirement?"

This is not just for westerners thinking to retire to Thailand, but for people considering retiring inside their own country.

I think you have to be careful about numbers.

This is an old chart from wiki, but I doubt the relative numbers have changed much.

Western expats are a minority of the total expat population

Times have changed...good ol glory days of Woodstock in Thailand are long over.  Wish it weren't...but as some on TVF has said, there are other adventurous countries that are much more welcoming, safer, and a immigration system that fosters acceptance...Thailand is NO longer the Elysium of hedonism.

I hardly ever meet any Germans these days, quite different from 15 years ago. Have a feeling they've found some better places to retire.

MHO the welfare of old farang ultimately is not really the responsibility of Thailand regardless of how long you have lived here.

'Changes' what's that got to do with the old dons' post.

Bottom line, keeping in mind compassion. it's not Thailand's problem.

And please don't respond about how many families in Essan are being supported, not really true and not relevant.

Compassion- it's every person's issue.  Please tell me what is wrong for anyone showing compassion to another person.  Have we all reached the point in the World where we do not care about our fellow human beings?  It appears so.

This is a man who is 90 years old- had he gone to an agent- he would have been approved immediately. However, he asked  Immigration for some compassion due to his health issues and situation.  Most countries and especially Thailand pride themselves on treating the elderly with respect and yes compassion.

This report and some of the responses show me how far some of the human race have regressed.
