Sister-in-law, mid 40s, has recently been told that a small lump in her breast is not malignant. She has not had a biopsy nor been offered further treatment other than "wait and see if it develops". They say that from the shape of the lump it's probably a cyst.

She is very concerned, especially as only yesterday we returned from the funeral of an even younger dear friend who died suddenly following her first course of Chemo, leaving two small children.

I am trying to help by seeking out a specialist for a second opinion, located in Bangkok. Any relevant information from members appreciated.

If she can afford to go private then either of these:

https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Youwanush-Kongdan

https://www.bnhhospital.com/find-doctor/search-result/?dname=Mawin

She will need a mammogram. If she has had one done already then bring the CD of it along and see the second doctor, not the first one as Bumrungrad now refuses to give appointments without doing the mammogram at their hospital (I kid you not.....%^^#!)

If she has not yet had one then cost will be about the same with either of the docs above, first is female, second is male, both specialiaze in breast masses and are very good. The first one (female) is especially senior in the field.

Consulation will be around 1800 - 2000 baht. If mammogram needed probably another 4K.

If it is a cyst then aspiration biopsy might be recommended, that is an office procedure but additional cost, not sure how much, best guess at the hospitals mentioned maybe 8-10k?

If she cannot afford this then go to breast clinic at either Chulalongkorn or Siriraj Hospitals.

Most breast masses are benign. There is a type of cyst that is cyclical with the menstrual cycle, i.e. they disappear or become much smaller when her cycle newly starts  (say 3-5 days after start of  period) and appear or become larger in the 7-14 days before period. Possible that this is what they think it is, if so she will herself see that the lump is gone at the start of the cycle.

Thank you so much for the detailed information and comments Sheryl. Invaluable. I will pass this on today.

I believe she is able to fund any procedures but not sure if that would extend to Bumrungrad costs, so thanks for the Siriraj and Chulalongkorn options.

Again, many thanks for your help.
