Woman dies, girl injured in Krabi collision – VIDEO

A female motorbike driver has died while the young girl passenger sustained serious injury after the motorbike tried a risky crossing on the road when it collided with a pickup in Krabi.

 

Krabi City Police and Krabi Pitak rescue workers arrived to find the body of a woman who was later identified as 23 year old Wilaiwan Jantra. Nearby they found a girl, identified as 12 years old Timaphon Mohthong, who had sustained a serious injury. She was rushed to Krabi Hospital.

 

The damaged motorbike and a damaged pickup truck were found on the road. 40 year old Komsan Promkerd, the driver of the pickup truck, was waiting for police at the scene.

RIP. I’ve had a few crashes in motor vehicles and walked away completely unscathed ... I would never have survived if I’d been on a motorbike.

You might have, I've been a biker for over 50yrs including 5yrs and over 200,000 miles as a courier and had many accidents, most serious injury a fractured wrist.

Rider of the motorbike didn't even look over her shoulder for traffic coming from behind before she had started crossing the road and was nearly halfway across.

See this all the time here and for the life of me can't understand why there is so little awareness of what is going on around themselves whilst in traffic.

Video: Female motorcyclist dead, child critical after smash in Krabi

Shocking dash cam and CCTV footage showed two angles of an accident involving a motorcycle and a pick-up in Krabi in Thailand's south yesterday morning. 

 

The Honda Click ridden by a Thai woman with a 12 year old female relative on the back is in the far left side of the Petchkasem Road in Thap Prik sub-district. 

 

Suddenly they turn into the path of an Isuzu pick-up as they try to enter the soi leading to the temple of Wat Nai Song. 

 

Wilaiwan, 23 was pronounced dead at the scene. 

 

Twelve year old Thimaporn is in a critical condition in Krabi Hospital. 

 

The driver of the pick-up Khomsan, aged 40, remained at the scene and gave evidence that was corroborated by the dash cam. 

 

CCTV from outside a convenience store showed that Wilaiwan had perhaps glanced back - but she still tried to cross in front of the pick-up, suggests Thaivisa. 

 

Khomsan was going from Ao Nang to Surat Thani. 

 

The victim had just been shopping and was returning home with her relative on the back of the bike.

Young girl seriously injured, i hope you soon recovers and has no lasting injuries.

Pickup driver did nothing wrong, and must be going through hell knowing that the young woman is dead.

I don't think;  as a scooter driver myself, I see it almost every day, scooter drivers who don't look around them , they think they are alone ! empty brain, is it special to Thailand ?

I drive in Bangkok and also witness this everyday. Just as you say, they behave as they were alone on the roads. Riding their bikes on the wrong side straight towards oncoming traffic, and expect the cars to avoid hitting them.

commonsense is lacking. It's so difficult to comprehend how anyone wouldn't instill such basic safety knowledge through out there generations or even just amoung there immediate family and friends. Is it just laziness? How hard is it to look over your shoulder? If you cant get off the road and don't be so dam selfish.

This tragic example is exactly why I have a Dash-Cam in my car and on my motorcycle. 

 

It's still astonishes me that so many motorcyclists can ride around with so little attention to their surroundings.

I see it so often too.

Motorcyclists pulling out from a side road onto a main road, turning left. You can see from the position of their heads that 80% of the time the motorcyclists do not turn their head towards the right to see what is coming towards them. They pull onto the main road with no interest in what might be about to plough into them.

I see a lot of that as due to the appalling level of education here.

The kids are discouraged from asking questions, thereby preventing any sort of critical thinking to develop.

My son has been criticised by his teacher for being too straightforward when asking questions. The teachers don't like it at all.

That's my fault for teaching him that evil foreign attitude.

   I also feel sorry for the driver, could have been me, you, or anybody else.

The speed limit is only 80kmh on this section of the road:

Phet Kasem Rd, Krabi (google street view)

Of course the motorbike rider should have waited but it looks like there was also no attempt to avoid collision by the pickup who seems to be going at a fair clip AND driving in the fast lane which is officially only supposed to be used to overtake or make a U-turn.

One of the things that was always drummed into pupils doing the CBT bike course in Blighty was always look over the shoulder before any manoeuvre .. do not rely solely on the mirrors as they have blind spots .. Time again the mantra was look over you're shoulder and be aware of what is going on around you .. But here the level of proficiency is woefully lacking for some who take to the roads from not using safety gear like helmets and seat belts right thru to the manoeuvres taken by some which are borderline suicidal .. Factor in the drink , narcotics influences and you have the catastrophic casualties here that the authorities appear powerless to stop apart from token gimmicky campaigns like " 7 deadly days " which by inclusion of the word deadly could be seen as an admission almost that you may end up dead going out on the roads .. It is quite shameful that this continues but continue it will ..

awww man, this just breaks my heart... every time I see bikers driving I cringe at families on a bike and the driving habits... I've been on a big bike for more than 40 years... just heartbreaking... ????

The Motorcyclist didn't look. Didn't look at all, not even once. 

 

There is no way even the remotest blame can be placed on the pickup driver... That would almost be like trying to blame the pickup driver for being there, if they weren't there the accident wouldn't have happened etc...

 

That said: It does look like the pickup was going quickly, but sometimes dash-cam videos can be deceptive when it comes to speed.

 

Motorcyclists had no helmet, and didn't look when swerving across two lanes - it didn't matter which lane the pickup was in.

The CCTV footage shows, at 0.34/35, a fraction before the other motorcycle passes her, the rider looking over her shoulder.

 

But by then it was too late and too quick to make any proper appreciation of the situation.

 

Everything about her approach to the turn was wrong.

The dead deserved it. Cutting lanes without looking at the back. Motorbikes here always ride as if the whole road belongs to them.

No one 'deserves it' [to die like this]...  She became a victim of her own inattention, but she didn't deserve it.... 

 

It could be argued that murderer / rapist etc deserves to die - but a young lady who's sole mistake was a moment of inattention did not deserve to die, she simply and tragically succumbed to her own stupidity, inattention, carelessness - call it whatever you will, but to die like this is not 'deserving'... .

This video is almost too painful to watch. So much time to get things right but it was almost as if the rider was concerned that she was going past her intended turning. If only she had stopped and waited..... And looked properly, of course.

 

I don't think too much can be made of the driver's positioning in the outside lane. I often drive there when there is nothing behind me in busy areas, it gives me the extra fraction of a second to react to events like this.  Along with over 50 years of driving and riding giving a sixth sense of what might happen. But it could be me tomorrow.

Talking of driving in the outside lane. I've asked a few people why they drive on the outside when it's really an overtaking lane.

The answers have varied from:

is it an overtaking lane?

the (concrete) inside lane is a really rough surface from all the lorries using it.

the tarmac melts in the heat and the lorries 'push' it between the inside lane and the motorcycle lane, making it difficult to drive on.

not really, a young Belgian lad did something similar with his thai gf on the back, he survived but with a nasty leg injury that put him in hospital for a month or so. she died.
