The injection is not that painful, and much better than risking rabies or any other bacterial infection from the bite.

Well, my experience is completely different from yours and it goes down to insects. But then again, It is a place of 70 million people, so finding exceptions will not be a real problem.

Cockfighting isn't an exception. Keeping animals in terrible conditions and mistreating them to enable them to extract money from tourists, isn't an exception.

The amount of people that come in contact with tourists and are dealing with animals(and treat them badly) is a micro fraction of the Thai population and represent nothing.

And the amount of Thais that take part in cockfighting? Millions.

Some kid, I would guess; like most of us by the age of 18, have some empathy with other sentient beings. It isn't rocket science.

Some soi dog charity turned up at our mooban last week, great I thought get rid of the diseased pests at last. Seem like they managed to catch about one dog! Idiots put collars on them so that the catchers leave them alone. This week a kiddie has been bitten by one of the pests. Couple of years ago the Mrs was attacked by a dog who had bitten 3 other people in the previous two weeks. Dead dogs do not bite, dead dogs do not breed.

Mrs best friend is considering divorcing her husband over his cocks, told him it's them or the family. He's turned the garden into a breeding farm, got about 30. He fights with blades on them and gambles heavily on the fights, seriously addicted.

Visited a large cockpit arena near my home, with a Thai friend who had entered his cock. The fighting didn't interest me much but the behaviour of the men attending was very revealing. Lots of big money changing hands and the guys faces! Ranged between pure venom and ecstasy as the cocks ripped into each other. Electric atmosphere.

Empathy for animals, and to an extent humans, is almost entirely lacking here. Many Thais express public feeling, but privately don’t give a damn, especially if there is pleasure or profit involved. That is why animals, and people, will continue to be abused. The society needs to develop for another few generations with improved education before anything will change.
