Hi there,

This is my second attempt to post this - I hope it works this time!

I'm looking for a flight Bangkok-Singapore in the next several days. I'm off to do a full-scale Web search to try t find the best deal, but if anypone has any recommendations, I'd put far more faith in the Thaivisa expertise than in my own Web-searching abilities. Has anyone found a good fare for the trip lately? Comfort etc doesn't really matter: what matters is cheapness!

The currect Lonely Planet says flights should eb available for about $28. This seems remarkably cheap to me, but I'd be delighted to take a fare like that if there was one available. Has anyone heard of anything?

Many thanks for your help!

Best wishes,

Jason

Hi there John.

Two recommendations.

Tiger Airways. They show a one-way fare BKK-SIN of 2735 baht (including all taxes and charges). That's $US83.50 in today's currency.

Air Asia will not sell a one-way ticket to you as you need to show that you have a ticket for onward travel - either back to your point of origin (BKK) or elsewhere. When I tried for a BKK-SIN-BKK fare, their website logged me out ... however their fare for a one-way BKK-SIN is 1200 baht (excluding any taxes and charges).

I have bought one way tickets BKK- SIN on Air Asia a few times.

I would still recommned Jetstar as the first choice. They are the only airline out the 3 to provide allocated seating.

Tiger use the budget terminal in SIngapore which is a pain in the ass.

Also, you can use any of the airlines as one way flights to maximise savings.

Thanks very much for your help! AirAsia loks nice and cheap - although JetStar is only slightly more expensive. I was put off AirAsia by the pop-up that says they won't sell one-way tickets to Singapore. Is this just a thing that AirAsia do, or is this a principle in general operation in Singapore? I just checked Lonely Planet, which doesn't mention it. JetStar don't mention it, either, so if it isn't necessary to purchase onward tickets, I'l probably go with them.

Many thanks again for that incredibly quick response!

I have booked one way tickets for all three as the airline which is the cheapest in one direction may not be the cheapest the other direction.

Airasia maybe changed their policy. Try and go to the Singapore AirAsia website and try to book one way from there.

To be honest if Jetstar are only slightly more expensive I would consider it as the planes are newer, you get your seat allocated in advance (Rows 12 and 13 have the best legroom) and they are nowhere as bad with delays as AirAsia.

Peter 991:

Air Asia did ALWAYS, since the very first day of operation, sell one-way-tickets to Singapore. When they logged u out, that had probably something to do with their website, which apparently has a few hours of BLACKOUT almost every day (that LOG-OUT thing happens to me almost EVERY day)

and TIGER does NOT (!!!) include the 700 baht airport-Tax at the moment (a real SCAM!!!). only for flights after 1st of April they add this......

try to book a flight for March and for April, and u will see the difference. but they dont tell u about this when u book a flight in March....... a SCAM

so u have to add the 700 on ur fare and pay cash at the airport....

as for the Quality:

yes, JETSTAR is the best, 20 kg luggage allowance, allocated seats, brand-new aircraft (Tiger's aircraft are brandnew as well). but its very much likely they dont survive in the Asian market, a lot of flights BKK - SIN had been cancelled already, and they loose money every month....

I think they have a bad management (Australian-based, and they try to copy their monopoly-market strategies to Asia, which won't succeed) , and out of those 3 budget carriers, their website is by far the worse, and user-unfriendly. but if they cease operations, that would be sad, of course..... competition is needed to keep the fares low....

and most of the time, they are not really "cheap". Flying SWISS or FINNAIR or GARUDA (okay, some people would want to avoid Garuda now) can be cheaper than the regular JETSTAR FARE

about LONELY PLANET: I always wondered why people see this as a "bible".... the latest LP of Thailand is average to poor.... as are most of the LP's (the recent LP of the Philippines is the worse travel guide I ever encountered in my life)....

Bangkok Air, usually not really known to be a great BARGAIN, has affordable flights to HCMC, even One-way (u didnt mention if u need a one-way and continue to Hongkong from HCMC). check their homepage.

otherwise, flights to HCMC are still extremely overpriced. I am sure several of the big airlines are bribing the Vietnamese officials to avoid more competition (same as Bangkok Air does in Cambodia...... or why u think the highway from Thailand to Siem Reap has not been completed yet). Air asia managed to get landing rights for boring Hanoi only, where as most people would prefer to travel to HCMC.

if not BKK Air, u have the choice between the two home carriers, THAI and VIETNAM AIRLINES, as well as AIR FRANCE and LUFTHANSA. Vietnam Airlines sems to offer the best fares at the moment, and - as u probably fly CATHAY PACIFIC from Hongkong to Germany later - u can earn miles on ur ASIAMILES account while flying VIETNAM AIRLINES.

on the subject of one way tickets to Singapore....

Last year i had a return e-ticket from Bangkok (but i didnt print the confirmation email) and i was stopped at immigration and asked to prove i had a return or onward ticket. I eventually got the airline to confirm to the immigration staff that i had a return ticket. In the meantime i had my passport thoroughly checked (my passport photo was a few years old). The whole thing took about an hour and wasn't a pleasant experience. I would advise anyone to have evidence of a return or onward ticket

Check the thai airways site, on the front page they have last minute special offers. Also this month they are 50% more points for this route.

Also ANZ, Cathay and Finnair fly direct between BKK and SIN

Look for bargain prices on those, depending on how empty the aircraft may be on the BKK-SIN leg.

Best bargains are generally in Business class for almost the price of Economy.

Otherwise Jet is always the cheapest if you can catch their lowest fare. (around 80$ one way)

My pal uses Swiss Air for his monthly trips up to BKK from Singapore - 180 SGD last weekend

I have used Air Asia, TG and SIA recently - all fine except for the kiasu on Air Asia

Flew a girl down on Jetstar last weekend and she said it was OK

I know it's childish but when me and the wife fly Tiger we always get up and rush to the boarding gate about 30 minutes before departure and then turn around to watch 80% of the passengers frantically run and get in line behind us in under 20 seconds. If you jumped off a cliff half would probably follow you.
