US Question: hand over the heart?

When I was a kid (when Ike was president) we were taught in first grade to recite the Pledge of Allegiance with hand over heart.

I have no recollection of having to do the thing with the hand for the National Anthem or anything else.

DT and his missus do it, have other presidents done it?  Do people in the US do that now, like at the beginning of a baseball game?

Hand over heart and face the flag if you're a civilian, any time you hear the anthem, or see a flag being raised or lowered. 

 

If you're military, it's a salute.   (Edit:  I'm sure there are more protocols for what and when it's appropriate, but I was never military)

 

Trump was never military.

 

Personally, I stand (almost) at attention and my hat comes off, but my hands stay in front of my belt buckle...

Yes. Other Presidents have demonstrated an ability to actually sing the lyrics.

Since ~ 2001-ish there seems to be a strong desire to out-patriot each other. The bigger the flag the better evidently?

 

I never stood at home when watching the anthem on TV, imagine most don't. Never as taught the hand over heart thing for the national anthem, believe that's a more recent semi-enforceable law now?

 

I too remember the Pledge of Allegiance, but not Ike - a relatively recent thing then, strengthened no doubt by the anti-communist fervor of the late 40's and 50's - always struck me as oddly reminiscent of something they did in Germany ca. 1933-1944.

 

The national anthem wasn't that big a deal when I was a kid, yes at a MLB game (not sure how ubiquitous it was though). Now? There's probably a Sirius FM station playing just the anthem covers 7x24?

At one point school kids were taught to do a palm down, extended arm salute that pointed to the flag. I think ww2 ended that, and the resemblance to the Nazi salute at the time.

We did the same every morning in elementary school. However it was an elementary school thing, never did in Junior or High school.

Not Ike, LBJ and Richard Nixon for me.

Thanks for the replies.

I figured it was a post-9/11 era thing.

Also Melania is naturalized, had to take classes etc, I figured they told her that.

 

Also, in grade school (NYC public schools) we had to sing "My Country 'tis of Thee"  (you Brits will appreciate that it is to the same tune as "God Save the Queen") but no hand on heart for that one, if I recall correctly.  Memory not clear on this, 50 years of intoxicants have passed through this bloodstream...

Yes, thanks for that memory jolt, remember this from grade school (Massachusetts) as well, 1960-1967 anyway, that tune predates the Star Spangled Banner (the third stanza of which is a reminder of our checkered racist past). My Country 'tis of Thee was sung, the star spangled banner not as far as I can remember.

 

God Bless America has been added to the 7th inning stretch playlist, post 9-11, along with Take Me Out to the Ballgame of course.

I was born in 57 (Providence RI).  Only did pledge of allegiance up through 6th grade ~ 11 years old.  As for the National Anthem, that was only done at baseball games (boston red sox) and I grew up in Rhode Island and back then going all the way up to Boston was rare.  We didn't have any money.  I don't recall any particular hand over heart being done.  I also was a boy scout, up through I was 18 and was an eagle scout.  I don't recall any hand hear thing for the national anthem.  It was always just "Please stand for the national anthem".  My oldest sister sang the National Anthem at her High School graduation (1973) and all I recall is people standing.  Later was in the USAF and of course while on active duty, stand at attention, face the music or the flag if you can see it and salute, or if in civilian clothes hand over the heart.    I personally disagree with kids being mandated to make pledges.  They are too young to understand what they are doing.   The "Pledge of allegiance" well, I don't mind educating kids and educating them in the customs and norms and laws of the country, but forcing them to make pledges just seems not quite right
