The week that was in Thailand news: Exercising my democratic right - to say it like it is!

Since a young age I have been very interested in politics. But I have never voted for anybody. I figured even as a teen that people who want power could not possibly be the people I desired to lead me. So I stayed home, got a large box of Maltesers and made some piping hot tea and sat up to enjoy the election results as they came in.

Rescued baby dugong “Marium” misses mom, says veterinarian

“Marium”, a six-month-old baby dugong, a species of the same order as the manatee, was accidentally separated from and now misses her mom. She clings to an orange canoe with her arms and tags along as if it were her mother, according to Nantarika Chansue, a veterinarian of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University.

Deputy police chief inspects war weapons in Sisaket province

SISAKET, 8 June 2019 (NNT) - A variety of war weapons were found in a canal in Sisaket province on Wednesday. The weapons had not been used by the Thai army. The Second Army Area spokesman declined to comment on whether they might possibly involve any political group.

NHSO approves budget for MMR vaccines for Thai children

BANGKOK, 7 June 2019 (NNT) - The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has been given approval for a 54-million-baht-budget to procure 100,000 doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. The doses are expected to arrive in August and won’t affect the government’s national immunization plan.

Thailand to reduce use of plastic bags, sterofoam, and straws by 2022

BANGKOK, 7 June 2019 (NNT) - On the occasion of World Environment Day, government agencies have organized activities to encourage people to place importance on solving haze and pollution problems, while 80 percent of the use of plastic cap seals has been instigated. The use of all plastic cap seals is expected to be outlawed by 2019.

Thanathorn confirms his party’s goal remains to change Thailand for the better

Thaksin Shinawatra sentenced in absentia to two years in prison for misconduct in government lottery case

BANGKOK, 8 June 2019(NNT) - Former premier Thaksin Shinawatra was sentenced in absentia on June 6 by the Supreme Court in charge of criminal lawsuits against holders of political positions, to two years in prison for misconduct in the two and three-digit lottery of the Government Lottery Office which incurred 1.6 billion baht in losses.
