BANGKOK, 12 June 2019 (NNT) - In an effort to enhance passenger safety, the Transport Company has implemented simulation technology at the Bus Operation Simulator Training Center enabling drivers to practice with simulated cases to ensure their preparedness, and help minimize possible losses from road accidents.

The Transport Company has opened the Bus Operation Simulator Training Center featuring a simulator of a large passenger bus that can run a simulation of real-life scenarios, the first of its kind in Thailand. The simulator has been developed by the Transport Company and education institutes, imitating actual operating conditions of a real-life passenger bus and feeding simulated visuals of different scenarios on computer displays which allow users to interact and respond to these cases realistically.

The simulator will help improve incident response skills among the company’s bus operators, ensuring their preparedness for all kinds of unexpected incidents which could happen in real life, such as heavy rains, storms, sudden stopping of vehicles in front. The training offered on this simulator will help reduce the frequency of accidents and improve passenger safety.

The Transport Company President Lt Gen Surapon Tapananon said today the simulation center is equipped with modern technology for bus operator training, which will replace some training with the actual buses, helping reduce energy and fuel consumption and help reduce human error in operations. Some 500 bus operators at the Transport Company will all undertake training in the simulator to ensure the highest preparedness for passenger services.

Four stripes bolted down on his epaulettes, that would instil confidence, wonder what they were awarded for? the hundred yard dash?

I hope they checked whether the brakes are functional!

Surely this setup needs to be on its side the default position of a Thai bus????

I for one think it is a damn good idea, in a previous life I was a bus/coach driver both at home and on the continent driving as far as Istanbul in some cases.

The level of competence amongst Thai PSV (Public Service Vehicles) drivers is woefully lacking, this technology should be made compulsory for all coach & bus drivers nationwide.

As for minivans - I'm at a loss on that score, I think that they are beyond help ????

First lesson involves keeping both hands on the wheel at all times.

Right next to it is the Minivan Simulator Training Center, where the drivers practice their simulated cases...Drive 50 km. over the speed limit in the wrong direction. Crash into an oncoming vehicle (Killing all aboard, plus a few pedestrians). Grab bottle of lau khao and half case of Red Bull, and run away from the scene in Olympic record time.

preparedness for all kinds of unexpected incidents

If you're prepared for something, it is not unexpected.

Does it,  show you how to accelerate at high speed. away from an accident.

Also, How best to crash the red lights, with 4 way flashers going

and headlight flashing as well.

Can it stop them falling asleep by sticking needles in their rectum ?

If the simulator can't do gearing down on hills, wet road conditions, brake failure, tired drivers, drunk/high drivers it is really of quite little use.

Such cynical responses. I hail this as a step in the right direction.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. This is a great step.

Maybe they could simulate Phuket having a bus service? Or would that be too unrealistic for a computer simulation?

Theyd  be  better  off opening a bus STIMULATOR centre where the wheel is wired up to a 240v mains  supply

Yes, but the game penalizes you if your speed drops below 100 kph at any time, or if you pull over to the side of the road to let an ambulance through.

What is the chance that real life Thailand driving situations are going to be loaded into the simulator?

It's more likely the simulator was developed in Germany or Japan, where driving circumstances are "normal" so to speak. Thailand...another whole ball of wax. I'm not knocking the attempt...any additional training will hopefully help, but a whole mindset education is really needed. If that is possible.

Your comments based on your personal experience, are well taken and appreciated. All to often, the keyboard pundits contribute nothing more than booze fueled criticisms and little personal experience.

They'll wreck those, too, while flashing high beams for the wall to get out of the way!

Come on folks, why knock the transport company for at least trying to improve driver awareness/ standards.

My own criticisms are based on several years of being a road user in Thailand. When other drivers are frequently putting your own life at risk, it pays to learn how certain road users are likely to behave. That way you can stay out of trouble.

I think it's an excellent idea, but there is some humour to be taken from how a "Thai" bus simulator might differ from a Western one. And we all know how dangerous Thai roads are compared to the rest of the world, so perhaps a Thai bus simulator really should present more dangerous scenarios to its drivers.

I think it will be better to test this simulator in Europe for example. Because a traffic is more quiet there (not like in Asian countries)
